Here's a story I forgot to tell yis:

Came out of Halfords in Carrickmines to see a huge old black Rolls Royce in the carpark. Went for a look and started chatting to the man. Turns out it was his Grandfathers originally, 1937 Phantom 3. It was restored but he was not afraid to drive it. He said "will I start if up" and I said "yes please!". He got in waggled the rich / lean, advance / retard thingos and pressed a button. There was a faint worr-orr noise. I though "shite, we'll have to push it". He then says "here, I'll open the bonnet". Grand I think, maybe we can jump start it. He opens the bonnet, and bloody thing was going !! Quiet is not the word. Then he showed me the power steering pump, not original he says. Looks fine, I says. From a Phantom 4, he says. He says "Do you hear that squeak from the belt?" Barely, says I. He got out a spray of silicone and gave it a dart and blow me the thing got even quieter.
V-12 from '37 practically silent. No ticks even.
He showed me how the roof would work, you lift the passenger part and slide the drivers part back under it, then lower it again.
I met someone today who told me this is a Landau roof and that the V12 was the renowned silent engine.
Was too shy to ask the chap his name, but it is a blood fine car and he was very decent to tell me all about it!

Any chance that his Grandfather was a chauffeur for the Royal family and that he was given a present of the car when he retired?

The reason I ask is that many years ago I went to buy a MK2 jag in Dublin and the guy had a V12 Roll in a shed which was been rebuilt and he had got new sleeves forged for the cylinders. He got something like 100 forged just to get the 12 he needed.

. .it was said that, with the engine running, you could balance an old penny (remember those?) on edge on the cylinder head & it wouldn't topple! Old British craftmanship - long gone.

Lot's of things were said. Such as that when running you could only hear the clock ticking in the cabin.

Of course, what they didn't mention was that RR made the loudest clocks in the world. :augie

Years ago a friend of mine had a vauxhall viva, even with the bonnet open the only way you knew that the engine was running was to check the fan was turning.

this is not a piss take it's true.

was it tom jones :nenau :D
