Hi guys just saw bbc news points west that the speed cameras are to be switched back on,at a cost of around about £600.000 pounds

Well they studued last years data (mild weather) and compared it to this years weather (Worst for 40 years) and noticed a minute increase in accidents that were obviously all down to camera's being off and not 3 months of snow and ice

Money, the funding got taken away so they turned them all off, they are now allowed to keep money they steal at "speed awareness courses" so have tunred them all back on again.
Of course this is nothing to do with money, only safety you understand.
The fact that less than 10% of accidents involve a speeding vehicle also does not detract them in the slightest at attacking what is a partial cause of 10% of accidents, if they erradicate speeding entirely accidents could be reduced by as much as 5% - although I reckon they would go up as on most Oxfordshire A-Roads with their 50mph limits I would probably doze off all the time.
Perhaps then they could find a way of going after the cause of the other 90% plus - i.e. shit drivers, be OK if they stuck them somewhere useful like outside schools but generally the scamera talivans always hide along roads where it is perfectly safe to be a a few mph over the limit.

I thought the big fuss about speed cameras was that they generated far more cash than they cost to run so people were suspicious about the councils motives.
I would have thought that, at £60 a pop, they should be self funding. If not, then they are probably redundant anyway.
I don't have a problem with fixed speed cameras - they are a lot easier to avoid than mobile ones or a black rat wi a hairdryer.

I find it somewhat ironic that Oxfordshire turns theirs back on, on the very day that vast swarthes of the country turn theirs off?

they will be self financing from the speed awreness courses plus thames valley makes about £10 per course, they also increased the the qualifying threshold to 10% 9mph

..The council never got the cash, they just got a yearly grant to run them, the fines went to buy MP's Duck Castles etc.
The funds got withdrawn so the council turned them off, this sulk resulted in a deal where they can keep a portion of the Speed Awareness course cash, so now the council can make a profit and central governments coffers get filled as well - everybody's happy (except us)
I would not mind if they stuck the Talivan's on housing estates and busted the chavs that fly past the kids play areas at 60+, but I guess they knwo thse little f***** are either in a stolen car, or won't pay up.

I see. Oh well, best keep me eyes peeled then, which I suppose I should be doing anyway. No point getting all bitter and twisted about it - it's not as though it'll change anything.

they were talking about it on lbc this morning and radio 4 on thursday if people didnt speed for 6 months thames valley would run out money and have to shut them down again

I managed to book myself on a speed awareness course a few years back courtesy of a 30mph zone which had been extended several million miles out from the village it once belonged to, 37mph between two fields hundreds of yards from the village was all it took.
The lies told were amazing, they were back on that 30% off accidents caused by speed (A lie to Advertising Standards Agency stopped them using in TV adverts as at the time government figures showed that about 10% had speed as a major factor - but this is not speeding only excessive speed, only about 4% of accidents actually involved a speeding vehicle at that time)
They wasted a couple of hours where a bit of basic education on awareness and anticipation could have done the world of good, the room was full of "normal" people, many caught by fixed camera's that they knew of, a classic case of poor observation / lack of attention to driving.
Instead it was blasted out brainwashing style a whole load of untruths, half truths and full on bullshit and then everyone was sent home having been well instructed on running over kids at 30 mph, well I decided it may still be better to not run them over at 40 instead.
And do not forget is they cannot genuinely catch anyone they just make up the speeds instead:

Yes it is a shame that there are 50% more deaths however, what was the cause of those deaths. It was not stated that it was to do with speeding. It could of well been drink driving or pedestrians etc.
Stats do not mean anything unless backed up with clarification.
