I have noticed that the paint on the front of the engine and starter motor is starting to come off.
Bike has had its 3rd birthday and is around 20,00 miles

(I had the starter changed under warranty about a year ago due to paint coming off). The bike is now out of warranty and I plan to tidy up the front of the engine, any thoughts on paint to use? I only plan on touching up the areas with paint missing.

Thanks in advance

Tim

Smoothrite is your friend - either satin finish or gloss :rob

thanks for your advice, I have used Hammerite on the fork legs of my old 1150GS, it was always a good match.

Will get some back for the engine. Overall the bike is great it is a shame that some of the paint finish is not as good as expected.

Thanks

Tim

Did you keep it smothered in ACF 50 over the winters?

I do, it made absolutely no difference to the paint coming off my sump though! I think the paint is applied in the same factory as the one that painted my old F650GS (single).

Paint on engines is not exactly new technolgy. Come on BMW sort it out!

Where's the FFS avatar?

That's the problem...it was then.

'They' (The nanny state tree hugging part of the gubbmint) changed the rules, so the old tried and tested solvent based paints were no longer an option, so all the manufacturers had to switch to water based paints.

Initially at least, this 'new technology' wasn't as good as the ages old one, so a lot of paint finishes from around the time of the change were pretty pants.

That's the way I understand it anyway :nenau

They didn't have to paint engines years ago. The ali used was better quality. :thumb2

I think you'll find that any parts replaced under warranty will be covered for a further two years, so it might pay to contact the dealer and kick up a stink.
