is anyone finding that the paint is lifting off parts of the engine onthe 650 gs twin, the bike is a late 2008 with 1000 miles on it .the bike is used in all weathers so would hate to think want it would look like after 10.000 miles,i would like to know if anyone had the same problem before going back to bwm.

Had the front master cylinder assembly replaced as the paint had just fallen off. Looked like it had been painted over rust.

Just had engine case, sump and starter motor replaced under warranty due to paint peeling. Bike is a F650GS ’08 with 1,900 miles. Rest of the bike is mint.

thanks for the info, this bike has all the same parts that need replaced .on the phone first light tomorrow and get it booked in ,wonder what fairy tale the dearer will come up with not to do the work.also have a 2005 dakar engine peeled like a bananna at 3 years old, but i would not change the bike for any price, just fited a small list of parts from touratect all ralley parts so the bike looks sweet as :drool thanks again and stay safe

After giving my F650 a good cleaning last night, I noticed paint coming off the sump area. Just spoke to my dealer (southport superbikes) and they said they will take some photos of the area and send them over to BMW when the the bike is in for the chain and sproket recall/replacement.

I asked if they have had any other problems with the paint, and they said no...

I will let you know how its goes atfer the 23rd of June...

12.5k miles - paint flaking off; swing arm at rear axle LHS, radiator, oil cooler pipes LHS, water pump pipe RHS, rust patch on headstock at frame number, corrosion to both forks just above limit of suspension travel, front brake disk, front caliper pad retaining pin was so corroded that pads were stuck fast (explain why the brakes were so crap). Not the most regular user of cleaning products, I admit, but my Triumph TT600 stood up better over 2 winters rather than the 650's one. Good old German engineering, eh?

You can't be looking after them right

Two and a half years old, used through the winters, 48,000 miles and still as good as new :thumb

I had my starter motor replaced under warranty, all sorted with no trouble.

You need to get it sorted soon as the bad weather will be here soon. Good luck

Do you use any protectant ? of sorts :nenau how are you Leg end? you seem to have disapeared then your post come back like buses :nenau

Cheers Puma. Been off planet for a while (I get bored with the whole internet thing every now and again). I've used ACF-50 since I bought the bike (17 months now), and apart from the area with flaking paint, it's just like the one in the pics above.

So that is the recommended solution

I have read this thread first when my engine block was pristine and then used ACF50 regularly.
Today, I found out that paint is comming off from the oil sump.

I wonder, based on the experience you guys had, is it worth:
1. asking dealer to deal with it (I've just extended my warranty)
2. somehow repair it
3. ignore it/wait what happens

I feel it is in part that will be quite exposed to salt during winter aluminium corodes easily.

Thanks for any comments

Vaclav

That eliminates option 1

Shoot, not happy to hear that. Maybe I was expecting too much from the extended warranty.
But flicking paint is not really a corrosion, is it? I understand that engine will not stay new forever, I am just concerned, that the paint will start to come off from that point on.
Is there some paint, that could seal it or something?
I'll see how it progresses, maybe ask dealer what could they do on my next visit.
