Hi folks,
Are there any known faults within the transmission?
Reason is, ive recently noticed the take up within the transmission becoming noisy and I can feel it more.
The chain is good and adjusted correctly.
This is the first chain drive ive ridden in years having mostly ridden boxers!
I bought it with 4k on and its up to about 21k now over about 18 months of commuting.
I'm just worried it could be an early warning??
Help please
John

Generally bombproof, i've not seen any transmission complaints on here or ADV. I don't read F800riders so someone may well chime in soon...

Let us know if you do find anything.

Best,

I take it that you've done 18k on the same chain and sprockets then John?

Maybe the full 21,000 miles?

Difficult to diagnose on a forum, but I guess your chain will have tight spots at that mileage. OK you've checked the tension, but have you done so by moving the bike forward a little at a time?

As Smythson says ... no known problems. Rubber Cush drive in the rear sprocket housing, if knackered, will give take up slack ... but mine still going strong at 108,000 miles

I honestly think you're ready for chain and sprockets. Genuine BMW sprockets and DID Gold Professional chain the only way to go :thumb

Cheers for all of that, it's a big help.
Reassuring to see the words "bomb proof and 108k" too!
I put a DID xring and none gen sprockets last summer, guessing around 8k or more! Though there doesn't appeared to be tight spots.
Interesting tht you mention moving the bike and rechecking. Should I check the tension with the bike on its wheels? Do miss the old shaft, but this bike has proved very capable so far!
As a mechanic on other equipment I appreciate things wear. It's i was very surprised when I put her in gear and move the wheel back n fourth. The front sprocket seemed to have a lot of rotation before fully taking up the internal travel, eg in 3rd, about 60degrees?
My other thought has been whether or not there's an idle or throttle control issue making rolling off and on the throttle a little rough? It has on some occasions cut out and when ignition was turned off and on I heard what sounded like the flaps of an aircraft resetting, somewhere on the engine!
I could with letting someone see the bike really.
Though I'm an experienced mechanic, there's nothing like relevant experience.
Cheers again

Ah ... it seems the backlash you mention is not in the drive chain, but internally inside the gearbox? I wouldn't worry if it's not making any goddam awful noises ;)

Depends on your suspension and it's setting as to how to check your chain tension, but in a nutshell your chain will be at it's tightest when the gearbox sprocket centre, the swing arm pivot centre and the rear sprocket centre are all in a dead straight line. Any movement of the rear wheel/suspension, from this point, up or down, will make the chain a little slacker.

Not to say that at different positions the chain might have tight spots and it's at that tight spot you want to be checking the tension, or otherwise set it right at it's slackest and then it'll be far too tight at those tight spots and cause probable damage to the chain, sprockets and bearings (rear wheel and gearbox)

Best of luck, check back in if we can help ya :thumby:

I know this was obviously a long time ago but wondered if you had a resolve to this issue??
I've owned a 2012 800gs for a few months and only added about 1000miles on but have noticed the same issue over the last week or so. I've checked chain adjustment, bearings etc.
I'm not enjoying the ride anymore and linked in with the harsh throttle response I'm considering a dealer visit but thought I'd have a quick look on here first for some ideas??????
