Last year travelling between Edinburgh and Jersey via LHR I had to use my passport around 4 or 5 times (with my tickets) on the scanning machines to clear security and move between airport areas......in the same country ffs....would not have been possible with my drivers licence

Good point, I do not have a valid passport so going on your experience I couldn't do that journey? If that is the case then they should be issuing passports free to British nationals or go back to short term passports.

Jersey is not in the UK, if that makes any difference

You can travel freely from one terminal to another at Heathrow, should you have a burning desire to do so. Getting onto an aeroplane or ‘airside’ is a different matter.

To get your free passport, arrive in a rubber dinghy. That though may require you going to France or Belgium first, which is where the cunning plan falls down. You’ll need to think outside the box…. Try the Isle of Wight, though the ferries are expensive or charter King Rat and his canal coracle thing, to drop you off a couple of hundred yards off Ramsgate. Then just make sure you paddle the right way…. Best done by following the several hundred swarthy males making the same crossing each hour.

I've calmed down now. You do not need a valid passport to get to Jersey from the UK or Ireland, you do need photo ID. It would appear that the airline/ferry company are allowed to stipulate which form of photo ID you will need to travel with them.
