Genuine answer. Try google and ask what is the purpose of password safes or are password safes a good idea. Then make your own mind up. I personally did a lot of research and decided it was safer to use a password safe than try and make up passwords on the fly. It is all about the security of the password safe and their level of data security. Then you have to try and exclusively use the safe and not keep passwords in cache or iCloud chain or wherever as that defeats the purpose.Genuine question here,

Are they not a pretty dangerous single point of failure? Or am I missing something?

There is, as you say, a single point of failure. Mainly if you crack the master password, all the others are revealed. If you only have to remember one password though, maybe you can make it fairly hard to crack?Genuine question here,

For the time being I think I’ll stick to making my own passwords up, I’m lucky / cursed to be able to remember random strings of characters.
This will probably change as I get older though, at which point I’ll be back here asking what the best password manager is at that time

Your reference to Lastpass is correct, but they aren't the only ones. Try Googling "password manager data breaches" and you will find that 1Password, Datakeeper and other have been hacked too. It seems the these hacks have harvested personal information but not the actual passwords because they are encrypted, with the master password for decryption. Lastpass do not store the master password.
I have and Lastpass head the bunch for data breaches. 1Password hasn't (yet) had any major data breaches. So still think it is one of the most secure out there. But like everything, make your own choice after doing your research
Dashlane (paid for) works for me for the past few years.
If you haven't already got one then would seriously suggest looking as skipping passwords and moving to passkeys instead. That's my next step as I haven't got a clue what any of my passwords are as they're all now 16+ characters, unique and random!

Bitwarden are launching their passkey from Oct this year. Any idea if this can be used with all accounts or only selected accounts? This is all a mystery too me but will try get my head around it.

Only yesterday i wanted to port forward something on my router.... after several attempts
i had to master reset the router and lost all the other ports i had previously forwarded ffs.
i cursed myself for forgetting the password and spent hours putting everything back as it was.
so yea, a password manager would have been useful!

Barnoe, why not write the password on the router? If someone reads it there, you have bigger problems.
I always chuckle at BTs routers, they put the Admin and Network passwords to be visible from the back. I presume many people place them on window sills…..
I have use Norton 360 Security and Norton password for the last 2 years and have been very pleased with it, it also syncs across up to 5 or 6 items.
I’ve used Norton without problems for years, the only glitch is that you have to have a master password to gain entry if your fingerprint doesn’t work…so really your vault is only as secure as your master password. If you make it easy that defeats the whole deal and if you make it complicated it’s hard to remember.
So a password comprising three random words is considered pretty strong, but possibly a bugger to remember. If only there was a free app that generated three random words, possibly directly related to a memorable location? In case you forget you could just look it up?
A "special character" in between would make it even more secure.

1Password costs money these days. I would look at Bitwarden if not using iCloud Keychain or Chrome.
