Performance Air Filter

K & N AIR FILTER

Hi folks

What's your recommendations on adding a K & N Air filter? Good,bad, indifferent?

My bike's had it's first service this morning, all good and it now means I can open the throttle up. :clap

I mentioned to the service guy that I'd noticed the bike "stutters" a bit in low revs, which I understand is down to the fuel mapping(?), and am wondering if adding a bigger filter would help?

Cheers

Im assuming you have just completed the 600 mile service, they do get smoother and more responsive after a couple of thousand miles.
Best to leave it alone, if the problem persists talk to your dealer again.
Its difficult to say if a k&N will flow more air, its wrong to assume the manufacturers own air filter is a poor design and an after market supplier who fits the same material to every filter they make is much better. The GS800 gives 100bhp/Litre in std form yet gives 70 mpg average and still pass all emission and noise regulations, that makes the design of the standard parts quite remarkable.

Stutter

hi, mediamark, my 650 stuttered at idle, even sometimes missing a beat, not enough to worry about it, but to my surprise it disappeared when at my 20k service I had iridium plugs put in, and now it just hums away, apparently these plugs are able to ignite the lean idle mixture better.

Thanks, thats interesting to know. Been talking to someone in the motor trade who informs me that putting a bigger air filter in would make the bike run even leaner.
The other factor could be that I've been using regular unleaded, not Super

I ran the bike in on super unleaded but have used standard UK since, to be honest I cannot tell the difference.
We tend to use super in France when available, thats mainly due to perceived problems due to higher ambient temperatures and higher altitudes.

BMW has created a lot of confusion about octane ratings due to its failure to properly localise product information, take a look at post #28 on the fuel thread.

BMW refers to normal unleaded as 91 RON and super unleaded as 95 RON, whereas in the UK 91 RON isn't available, 95 RON is normal and 97/98 RON is super.

So sticking in ordinary unleaded is just fine.

Any other suggestions or is it a case of hoping for a software update, which seems unlikely now the F800's been out for 3 years?

I fitted one of these

and it did smooth out the lower end of the rev range with no noticeable drop in fuel economy

I think that a combination of an accellerator module - which makes mixture richer- and a K&N filter -makes mixture leaner- would be ideal. I have the accellerator, and Iridium plugs, it makes a big difference. So, wondering if adding a K&N would improve things more, makes the bike breathe better??

....but if the mixture is leaner, won't that make the stutter worse because there's less fuel supplied?

Let us know when you have. :thumb

I have fitted it now, but new tyres on at the moment as mike mike tells me I have to get rid of the: "las tetas del cobarde".

Then It will be fluid, But I can say my bike has never stuttered it allways been smooth as a smooth thing and not snatchy at all :nenau I have an akro no baffle and no Cat  sings beautifully I can not notice much difference but I know its there maybe its a mind thing right now :nenau but service interval for filter and the cleaning - oil kit I got with it will prolong service life no end.

Yep I like it :thumb2 :D :beerjug:

Regarding that exhaust set up, when you dumped the cat how did you rig the O2 sensor?
I am really curious about this, my stock system is rusting and BMW wouldn't replace it so I am thinking if nobody buys the bike from me, I might opt for a true flow through aftermarket set up and have some fun.
It would certainly wake up the GS1200 boys around here.

Everything else is the same cat removed from standard pipe and then put back together and enameled, sensors in place. I have the remus pipe straight through but in store at the moment (just want a black look) again sensor in place I think as with the K & N and the de cat the fuel injection has adjusted it's self maybe some one more in the know might explain that better, but it works and works well :thumb :D

just need to thrash the arse off of my las tetas del cobarde :D :beerjug:

Ride through a cold puddle first and get them to stand up.
This is the part that most people miss and then they wonder why those things are still there and have gone all soft and wobbly. Pay attention, start slow, and listen to some Barry White while you get to "work" on them.
