Petrol leak?

Got my new 02 Adv home tonight, parked her in the garage. One hour later the garage and house (connecting door!) reek of petrol.
I can't find any leaks, but the overflow hose is wet.
Tank is down to 3 bars, so not an overfilling problem.
Where does the overflow hose come from?
I'm assuming I've had the leaking problem whilst I was riding and the 'leak' is now just evaporating away. Mrs Spout wants the bike outside on the drive...aaargh!

Any suggestions?

Long shot but it happened to me, Last time you filled it up you went right up to the top and it overfilled, but not by much. You then closed it and rode on. Since then its got hot and the bit of petrol that overflowed has expanded itself out through the tube.

This as I say happened to me only a week ago by the way.

Check your quick connectors on the fuel lines(Adv have them as standard) . They're Underneath the right hand side of the tank. There have been official B#W recalls on these because of leaking. Very dodgy because they are right above the right cylinder and hot exhaust header .....which doesn't go well with petrol

Pipes run from filler cap insert and roll over valver both located in the filler cap area. Rubber pipes then run through the fuel and connect to the fuel pump/sender plate on the inside of the plate via 2 reusable clamps.possibility that these haven't been fastened properly if the fuel filter has been changed recently, or if the pips have split

Had a look at other threads on fuel line leaks - mine are dry, so hopefully not leaking.
No yellowing cases or signs of past leaks.

I've come to the conclusion that petrol in tank was "slopped" around worse than usual due to my cack handed bouncing on and off the centrestand trying to find the bikes ideal parking place in said garage.
Somehow petrol got into overflow system in filler? Will check viability tomorrow.
I'll also check all my hose/line connections over the weekend.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, petrol leaking out overflow etc.

There is a metal pipe attached to the inside of the filler apparatus inside the tank, at the end of which is attached an oval shaped float like object.

On my bike ('95 R1100GS) this 'float' clips into place around the pipe. This is part of the breather system for the tank.

My problem was that this 'float' was loose and when I filled up petrol entered this float and exited through the breather hose which is right beside the overflow hose. Once I took out the filler and seated the float correctly my problem disappeared.

Happened me last week. Filled the bike right to the brim, while onthe centrestand. No fuel leak. Rode 400 yards to my friend's huse and put the bike on the side-stand. Fuel pissed out the overflow hose.
Tip - leave on centrestand for at least 5 - 10 miles if you have filled right to the brim.

mrs spout sleeps on driveway and bike in garage, solves the inconvenience of the smell!!!

Just had my brand new GSA in for its first 600 mile service.As part of the check, they told me they checked for leaks in the fuel sysyem as part of a recent recall from BMW

Filled the tank Friday. No petrol coming from the overflow. So no problems there.

Got home and carefully put it on centrestand. No smell of petrol!
The engine does run notably warmer than the water cooled 650, but I think that's a pleasing smell

Overflow pipe outlet was bone dry. Strangely an hour later, although there was no petrol smell in the garage, the end of the pipe was slightly moist (petrol smelling liquid). No big deal, I've got better things to worry about (like Jez's Tong Off Road session today on Tourances )

Had to call BMW on wednesday to get my leaking fuel line sorted on my 04 adv bike was at work , parked up , sparked up a fag and thought thats not a good idea.
Anyway temp repair by the bmw guy.
Need to check to see if the mods been done.

It's now over a year since I started this thread. As it's surfaced again I'll give an update:

All fuel lines, rollover valve etc replaced - didn't cure the problem.

Hot engine causes tank to vent that's all.

I now connect up the breather tube to an extra tube which pokes out of the garage door. Leave it like that until bike is cool.

No more smells in house (petrol!).

Similar thing happened to me once. The petrol cap appeared to be closed, but when I pressed it, it clicked home properly. I had ridden just over 100 miles since brimming it when I found this.
