I got distracted whilst filling up with petrol today and gave the front of the bike a shower of petrol.
I managed to get some water and wash everything down and dry with paper wipes at the service station.
But... despite all of that, I now have stains on the screen that make it look messy. I think most of the marks are on the inside.
I took the screen off when I go home and tried washing up liquid in water.. came up a bit better, but not much.

Any suggestions on removing them??? it would be appreciated :)
Hope I don't need to buy a new one...

Sorry MB

Looks like a new one.

Petrol is a solvent which irreversibly "eats up" the plastic polymer. No amount of retrowork will salvage it back to "as new". You can get a new one for as little as £40 !

Thanks Alex. I kind of feared that. I've carefully played around with a few cleaners since posting but nothing has made any difference. Oh well, I guess I'll fork out for an MRA Vario.

I'd give Yosi's suggestion a go (ie with a good quality polish) ........ but I tried many types of polish ( yes - I did exactly the same thing 3 years ago !) and it left fine faint and slightly opaque swirly stuff on the screen - it was never really the same again.

Welcome to the world of the GS screen-swap club ! It's downhill from here on as we're NEVER satisfied. I do like my MRA 2-piece though.

Try a good polish stuff. It will not remove the stains, but it will make them less visible...

Guess how I know...

Took Yosi's (and Alex's) advice on the other thread. Lots of elbow grease (actually Autoglym Super Resin Polish)... it took a fair time but I've managed to clean most of it up and its looking pretty good again.
I'll probably have another go later but it's currently looking quite acceptable.

Thanks... saved a bit of money for a bit longer:D

I got a small petrol splash on the screen some time ago. I found that using "Brasso" liquid metal polish with plenty of elbow grease did the trick.

Funny, I did exactly the same last week. Made a bit of a mess, so wont be spoiling it by chopping the lip off & see if its any quieter.

Best thing I've found is plastic aircraft canopy polish as used by the RAF etc for polishing small scratches out of perspex cockpit covers. I'm not sure if you can actually buy it, I'll find my small bottle and get the details if u like? but its done a great job on both T595 and VFR800 screens when i did a similar thing

If no joy

Hi

If you have no luck I have a screen surplus to requirements as there is no bike, so let me know, cheap as chips.

Cheers, Nick

toothpaste

try toothpaste, use small circular movements and your fingertips, it might leave the screen "cloudy", buff out the "clouds" with brasso.

RESULT!!!

Thanks to all the inputs I've now had another go at the screen...
and it's looking really good... all the petrol stains have gone.

The sequence I finally used was:
Colgate Total Fluoride toothpaste (plus whitening) used on selected stubborn marks... applied by fingertip.
Brasso across the whole screen
Autoglym Super Resin Polish - whole screen
Last but not least.. Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection

Do you think it was the Fluoride that made the difference... it shouldn't rot now :D

Again... thanks to all of you for your inputs... the :ukgser does it again

A trend..

Well.. i did a Masterdabber is scotland.. wet gloves and whoops petrol all over my screen and RAM GPS mount,,

White spots were the petrol hit on both screen and mount, mount now cracked and bust where the petrol hit, but screen ok.

Hoping that i can get the marks out.. anyone got any newer tried and tested methods for removal of petrol stains from the screen???

The answer is Micro-Mesh made by Micro-Surface Finishing Products Inc. Its an Americam company. They do it in boxed kits and the one needed for plastic screens is called Micro-Gloss. It consists of various grades of very fine abrasive paper and a cream polish. It works superbly, I have used it to return my screen to perfect condition. These kits are widely used to polish aircraft canopys (as someone already mentioned). No doubt they have a website....
