Picos - July - What is the one thing you would not want to miss?

We went a few years ago. No recommended hotel, no recommended routes or must see/do stuff. We found a hotel that was, by chance, very nice. Clean, comfortable and friendly. The barman made us endless snacks from the kitchen while we watched the football with him one evening when their restaurant was closed. During the days, we went out and rode. No plans, just "Ooh, that looks interesting. We'll go that way". Back to the hotel for relaxing evenings and an excellent in house restaurant. Eat, sleep, ride, repeat. Brilliant.

Totally agree, I've stayed at Hotel Del Oso 3 times maybe 4......and will stay again for sure, I've stayed in and around Potes numerous times and would choose Del Oso over any of the others I've stayed in, it's in my all time top 3 for sure.

Potes gets overrun with tourists, especially bikers.Totally agree, I've stayed at Hotel Del Oso 3 times maybe 4......and will stay again for sure, I've stayed in and around Potes numerous times and would choose Del Oso over any of the others I've stayed in, it's in my all time top 3 for sure.

It’s fine if you want a pub crawl and steak and chips every night .
But I’m too old for all hustlers and bustle . Much rather sit on the terrace at Del Oso with a large gin and tonic, quite often as the evening showers arrive .
It’s my happy place especially the sofa just to the left of the main entrance as you approach hotel
10 nights in the Picos.
I’d most certainly not stay:
A. In one hotel for the duration.
B. Every night in some lonely location, with nothing but the hotel and the odd goat.
There again, I’d probably not devote ten nights to the Picos exclusively.
3 nights max, then move on to the next base. In 10 days I would probably include riding in the Basque region, Cantabria and Asturias with at least one of the bases in a historic city or large town to give a day off the bike exploring on foot.

I’m like easily do a week in the Picos. So much to do.
But if you’ve not been to the area then I’d do 3/4 nights then move on .
So much to see.
Asturias is stunning as is Galicia and Leon .
You could follow the coast
Stop in Cudillero, Luarca,Puerto de Vega,Navia and Tapia de Casariego.

Head further west around the coast .
Both Vigo and Lugo are stunning .
Head inland and stay at the Parador de Santo Estevo, the most stunning of all the paradors in northern Spain .

We’re on tour for c.14 days and intend spending c.10 days between n / w Spain and Portugal then over Pyrenees into France to head north and depart eventually from Cherbourg.

in that case the road from Pueblo de sanabria to Braganza is fabulous as is the roadfrom Ponferrada to Truchas but you have to bear with the first few miles of tatty to where it opens out into a race track
and the N221 along the Douro valley is another spectacular road ( my favourite in the whole world )
