Picos, northern Spain and France trip report

Looks super Grant.

I’m in Caminha, south of Vigo. How close did you get to here?

A long way off. We were in the Picos which is basically due south west of Santander. Now heading north in the southern part of France

I am afraid of heights so didn’t venture out to the end of the glass bit….
Poof! I made it to the end yesterday. Still in Quillan. Went through the Gorges de Galamus today, east of Quillan. Makes the St Georges Aude one you did today look like an autobahn. A proper gallery road
You rode past my hotel today, Logis Cartier. Nice, good food, big garage. Although not happy that I booked the business rate as only supposed to be for French people and not on a Sunday. "The computer should not have allowed this." We will negotiate after breakfast tomorrow

Poof??? ….🤣🤣🤣 not me mate… that’s you🤣🤣🤣🤣

Anyway we rode through Quillan and stopped at the Carefour just outside for some drinks. The gorge was great. Yes, I saw your hotel as we rode past it. Shame we didn’t know you’d still be there or we could have met up. Opportunity missed.
Anyway good to see you were enjoying the area as well

Reference the business rate thing. I have booked that in the past and have then said I would pay for dinner separately. All the faff then as to why… well because it let me. Best let them talk to Logis as it is an option on thier website but normally they then give you a special menu that’s not à la carte. It’s all very confusing ….

…..anyway. Hotel is full despite rooms being dreadfully “tired” BUT… restaurant was full. So a 3 course dinner for €37. Cheese for and extra €7 and a 50cl bottle of wine for €15….
Food was very good. Cheese plate was huge and wine brilliant so all up we paid €59 oh and a 1.5 litre bottle of the local fizzy water for €3… I get now why the restaurant was full. Thats a good deal to me….

Until someone tells me as they have in the past that some biker mates would scoff at paying that for scran…. Natch natch natch
:beerjug: :beerjug: :beerjug: :beerjug:
……muppet….

🤣🤣🤣

Luckily the 12th falls on a Monday this year, so there is no long BH, at least In Spain a 3 day BH is not considered "long", or "puente" as we call it (I know you know this, it's for others). Next year will be a different story. A good weekend to avoid the more scenic roads and their access routes in any case 10-12 October.

Doh, one of the few 'puentes ' based around a fixed date and i confuse it with the other one, August, mierda! Twenty nine years in Spain and still cocking up :)

Oh, me Mr Midnight Muddlehead meaning one thing but saying the opposite, of course Spain's feast are always on the day that they fall on unlike in Britain where they're literally moveable feasts so that the 'puente ' is unknown - sad bastards that they are :)

That's handy to know. We got to Santander yesterday for a couple of weeks tour on 4 wheels. Off to Picos tomorrow and then probably head west towards Portugal and explore some of the less popular national parks along the way.
We explored the N260 and a load of roads nearby in May this year, some of the best biking roads in Europe IMHO.
Some of the hotel prices are a bit high, but there are still some good deals available. We are paying €84 a night for a 4 star hotel here in Santander with a superb 3 course meal including a bottle of wine, bottle of water and coffee at €29.

Mass public sector strike in France tomorrow....Will anyone notice? :D
Make some notes... the French are the experts when it comes to national strikes, demonstrations and protests.

Great report @grantmac.

My brain doesn’t register road numbers. Weird. I know between this place and that but as for road numbers..nope means nothing. 😂

Day 7. Lacaune to Dunieres

So after a lousy brekky today we headed out into the strong winds of the morning.
I was going to leave a shite review of the hotel but considering dinner accomodation and meager brekky all in was €125. I can’t complain and I did sleep good so…..

This morning It was trying very hard to rain but in essence just spitting. Bikes were fine but the 3 Italian riders who had also parked in the church car park one guy had a flat. Luckily just around the corner was a tyre garage so he was fine.
Today was really about the riding and less scenery with one exception which can be seen in the photos below. We headed up into the hills again but it really was windy.
Even in the hills the roads were mostly superb. Great bends but bends where you could really get your pegs down and make some progress. A brief Photo stop and a coffee break at Millau and we continued our journey north. Total just over 310km and we arrived in the small village of Dunieres and our hotel Logis hotel de La Tour. Quiet location and not many guests. Comfy rooms and restaurant looks good as well. We will find out tonight
