Pilot road 4

Just wondering if anyone has experience with the difference between the Pilot road 4 and pilot road 4 trail? They are both available for the rear on my 1200 gs. Can anyone recommend one over the other?

Yeah I think I'm going to get a set. The standard pilot road 4 is a tiny bit cheaper.

No they don't. I am just curious.

Pr4 trail is softer than standard pr4. Quick warm up, good grip wet/dry, smooth roll side to side and not harsh ride.

I'm on the Wirral also and haven't been able to find anyone locally so I have been going to SMD in Leigh.

PR4 Trail are a stronger tyre than the standard PR4 and are usually recommended for the GS/A

From memory, never a good idea.

Pr4 Trail shoulders 1 and centre 2
Pr4 shoulders 2 centre 3
Pr4gt shoulders 2 centre 4

1 is softest 4 hardest.

If you were doing a big trip on the road; PR4 Trail Front and PR4 GT Rear would be best selection, and would probably last about the same time.

However, Michelin do not recommend this choice !

This assumes that they are available in the size's you require.

I'm confused by your responses. I would have thought a softer trail in the front and harder standard pr4 on the rear would be better? I always wear out my rear before my front. Would have thought that would give more even wear? I don't do much motorway work, so it's not really a consideration for me.

I could be wrong but I think the Trail has a stiffer side wall construction for the heavier big trailies.

But Trail has dual compound which is softer in middle/sides than PR4, this is softer than PR4GT which is for heavy tourers like Goldwings etc.

I don't think that the GT comes in pre LC tyre size's. Which if it was long levity would be the one to go for.

Michelin don't recommend Trail front GT rear, because they haven't tested that pairing. Although the tread patterns are reasonably close, and the general tyre profile similar.

Personally, 6k out of a rear tyre isn't too bad.

Compound is a separate issue. The Trail and the GT will be a stiffer tyre made with a stronger carcass for heavier bikes, I wouldn't use a normal PR4 on a bike as heavy as a GS.






Edit............In hindsight, I wouldn't imagine there would be a problem using the standard PR4 but Michelin went ahead and developed the Trail and the GT for heavier bikes, so why not go with them.

Why ?

My old Trophy 12 weighs more than my gsa and it has PR4's.

Why not check the load rating on the sidewall.
