Piston Broke

Has the dealer done any more to asceratin what is up with your engine? I get that for you, the least stress/hassle thing to do is accept their deal but it would always niggle me that they may be fixing it for £500 and making a tidy profit from me.....hope the new bike is all that you seek.
I think like that as well. However, on the other hand it could go the other way. The dealer could be left with a major re build at much cost.

If Redboots ends up with an acceptable bike at an acceptable cost, I’d say it’s a win, and DGAF about the dealer.

Unless he wants to DIY with the costs, efforts, time, risks, etc., that entails, and the chances of a big win are not huge, I’d suggest.

I think you’ve probably made the right choice all things considered , but what a shit sandwich ! It doesn’t reflect well on a major motorcycle manufacturer that there is clearly a well documented problem in one of their product range, and their customers are being left with the options you had. (remember what Honda had to do with their V4 engines?)

They would not open it further (head off) without me saying I would pay for it and the sourcing of another engine sort of superseded that.
The thought had crossed my mind.
The clatter that it made after it managed crank the engine over was an assault to the ears and after them saying the timing chain is in the right place, it doesn't bode well.
I don't think they will be doing it for €500, even if its just the apprentice doing it.

As you say, the stress free option and I will be riding again in 2 weeks and not 2 months and maybe more because France shuts down for all of August.
I would probably do the same, in full awareness I had been beaten into submission, and that despite them taking a gamble, the dice was loaded.

 F).

The wife, she say yes!

Pick up the "new" bike in 2 weeks.
They have to swap some accessories from the old to the new and do its 1st service (included) after I have put 6-700 km's on it. and activate the Quick Shift for €200.
:wave
I did tell her you had me to visit in Cochem next year.

The 890R would have been a logical next bike for me, better off road than my current bike, low COG and I've no doubt it would be better for my purposes. I wont consider anything in the 790/890/Norden range now precisely because of numerous reported issues with the engine so whilst Im not sure KTM care, this isn't doing their reputation any good.

Me neither
Quite like the Norden - but not the warranty stance
I guess we’ve been spoiled by BMW

If by "Spoiled" you mean manufacturers fixing their own fuckups then yes.

Most are run by bean counters who want to cut the R&D budget, cut the materials budget, cut the labour budget, and then when things go wrong, like chocolate camshafts they just hope it will either:

A: Fail outside of warranty period
B: They can blame the owner for the problem

Not sure what they are like now, but I almost bought a Triumph many moons ago, but the forums at the time had lots of horro stories, engine fails "You must of run it low on oil mate", Head Bearings shot cos they never greased them in the factory "You must of wheelied it mate" and that sort of guff.

Not so sure about Jap stuff as it typically does not go wrong, in late 80s I worked at Honda dealer and we rarely had a claim, and never had issues getting stuff done under warranty, but a couple of years ago I bought an 18 month old / 3,000 mile CB500X with rusty fork stanchons and was told "they all do that sir", "it must of got wet sir" and no chance of getting them on warranty....

....Also highlights the decline in quality, it was replacing a 60,000 mile 14 year old 650 V-Strom that had no such corrosion issues, and I had commuted on it for a couple of years, certainly seen as much rain as the almost new Honda!

I really can’t accept that 3.5 to 4k to fix the engine is realistic. I know labour charges are exorbitant but even so.......silly money

It is.
I will be taking out an extended warranty next year.

A lot of images I have seen of failed cams seem to be of #2 cyld exhaust cam lobes and they are blue'd at that end of the shaft.
That would suggest there is a problem with oiling.
There is a revised part number for the cyld heads now and the old part is not available, but that may be to do with Euro5, or maybe not....

Collection day for the "new" bike is now Saturday.

I have seen a couple of video's on the '23 790 and get why you cant just bung a '23 motor in a '19 bike.
Its made in China  by CFMoto and is the same motor they put in the 800MT.
They give a 4 year warranty on that bike, so you would think its now sorted with the mods to the engine.

Here's hoping :D

Apparency, KTM in the US have now extended the warranty on 2024 790's to 4 years as long as its dealer serviced.
I doubt they will do that for '23 bikes, but as far as I know they are the same spec, CFMoto built units, so hoping that bodes well.

Personally I would accept the new bike and put it up for sale, buy something else or even the CF Moto 800

The CF Moto looks great for the money <£9k with full luggage for the "Sport" model, would much rather t=have one of these with 4 year warranty than the KTM version - which is built by CF Moto anyway.

Gotta be pretty keen on the extra 10% Power to find another @£5k to go for the KTM 890S too, hoping CF soon get the newer 890 or 990 engines, then I might be tempted to trade down from a 1290.

Can’t see how buying a Chinese bike and rebadging it, and calling it a premium brand is going to be a successful business model. If I were in KTM’s boardroom , I’d tell them so too.

Then again, I knew a lady who laughed outright when I suggested she save a few bob and buy a Skoda rather than the VW she had suggested she would purchase. I guess some folks are stupid enough to buy the brand.

"New" bike collected.
Some observations. It is smoother all over and is able to pull lower revs without "rattling" - knock sensor? and more civilised on low throttle. The windscreen is better than the original 790 with no real buffeting, though there is some noise where my visor clips on. Stand up and it goes. It has the "Demo Pack". My left hand always wants to do the downshifts though.
Everything else seems the same, but a better bike. Still has the KTM rattle.

It is obviously made to a price. The bars are not Renthal and they don't include the little cubby boxes in the rear side panels although the mounts are there. Swapped mine over. No insulation covers on the battery terminals.

They also messed a couple of things up.
I removed the grab handles and rack and fitted a different rear rack with nice countersunk, stainless bolts on the old bike.
They refitted the grab handles and used the standard panhead bolts to fix the rack on. Why? They had all the parts from the old bike so now the countersunk holes have burrs on them, ffs. More bolts in stock so swapped them.

They swapped the centre stand to the new bike but some kak-handed monkey must have levered the springs off and stretched/bent the 2 springs. There is an adjuster bolt that winds the load on or off the springs, ffs.

They failed to transfer the packer pieces from the LiFePO4 battery to the new bike so it was like dangling a worm in a bucket. Now sorted with some rubber I had in stock.

Other than that, all good.
