I'm planning to change my 160,000 mile barrels and pistons (1978 80/7, pre nikecad) for a spare, used set at the wee-Kend and just wondering how clean the replacement piston tops should be, have cleaned one and polished but still have some black marks round the edge and valve recesses. Was contemplating putting them through the dishwasher but not sure if this is a good idea :nenau? Don't tell Mrs bubbles .
This is the one that's been cleaned

Have just soaked this with a bit of WD fluid.

I have a new set of rings to put on them. What do you think?

Be careful with alloy/aluminium in dishwashers unless you leave out the detergent. Had some aluminium stuff come out covered with black oxidation (?) not pretty. Ultrasonic cleaner maybe the go as per the carb cleaning thread. I just bead blast the crowns after carefully taping up the sides and ring grooves.

2nd reason to be careful is that if you get caought by the missus you will discover that walking with a piston jammed up your arse is uncomfortable  :D
