Pitted Cams

Just finished a 2600 mile ride through Germany, Italy, Austria, Czech and Poland on my 2013 GSWC. Still love the GS, handled great from autobahn to rain to mountain twisties.

I got back and put it in for its 12,000 mile service. The dealer calls and tells me I have pitting on the cams. Now I'm not huge mechanical guy but I know a little. But, I am dumbfounded on how the cams can be pitted. It was more like striations along the outer edge. The dealer was also pretty confused as they have not seen this on the new GS yet. They are ordering new ones and putting them in hopefully this week.

My guess is either a bad set of cams, maybe a string of the metal? Or, bad oil (which was replaced by the dealer)?

Any and all input would be great.

I am not trying to throw up flags or knock the bike, I love the bike, but, has anyone else heard of this? I have searched and haven't seen anything like it.
Again, not one of those guys trying to dis the bike.
 
Not heard any other problems, mine has done 7k with a quick 1.5k trip to Normandy coming up, only had switch problems and a bit of a clonky gearbox although that's better than it used to be! Let's hope it's a one of problem and causes you no more problems.
 
Pitting is usually lack of lubrication or poor manufacture (new bmw ......what do you reckon ?)
 
Good that the dealer noticed it and has decided to sort it out while it is still under warranty. Make sure that he replaces all the followers as well.
 
Sounds like the hardening process wasn't completed properly, :blast

As smug says make sure the followers are renewed too.

When the Stelvio first came out all the cams were changed for the same reason , (Hardening not to spec)
 
Just an update, got the bike back. They are saying the metal was bad on that set of cams. They're not sure why, but are confident that was the problem. They told me to bring it back in after about 600 miles to check the new ones.
