Help, i am getting confused

My 2001 1150 GS 67k miles has the rear end squeek associated to paralever bearings. However it would seem that some people describe the pivot pin bearing as the paralever bearing.

please correct me if i am wrong in the assumption that the paralever bearings are effectively the swing arm bearings, the ones by your feet and the pivot pin is the adjustable bearing by the rubber boot at the bevel box end of the swing arm.

If that is the case, which am i to replace? i have recently adjusted the pivot pin bearing and that has taken out the play that i found at the back wheel, however the rear end squeek is still there.

I'am with you on your description... re pivot pins/ para-brgs' as for your squeaky back end could be your Para-Brgs or your suspension mounts..:nenau

thanks, definately not the suspension, not long had that out and thoroughly lubricated it on return.

I am sure it is the paralever bearings per threads on this forum, just confused as to exactly which bearings people are meaning when they discuss the paralever bearings....

Paralever bearings are the paralever bearings.

Swingarm bearings are the swingarm bearings.

The pivot pin doesn't have a bearing. it's a pin for the bearing to pivot on.

ok, point taken, how is it then that the Haynes manual (hate it though i do, its the only other resource that i have) states that the swingarm is the paralever and that the pivot bearings are those next to the gator (bevel box or final drive end of the swing arm)

it would seem that per this forum people are saying that the paralever bearings are near the gator at the bevel box or final drive end of the bike 'Paralever bearings are the ones in front of the gaiter. Tapered rollers'

taking advice from this forum into account i ordered 'paralever bearings' from moto bins and receive the bearings that per Haynes are the swingarm (paralever) bearings. gearbox end of the swingarm.

i am trying not to be ignorant here, it is an honest question of which bearing supposedly is making the noise before i strip the bike apart and find i have wrong blooming ones. I cannot afford to have the bike off the road in bits, so therefore i ask those that know the answers; the people that have done it before whether i am barking up the right tree or weeing into the wind!

the part number i have is 33172311729...... as always life is simple when you know the jargon and dont have conflicting advice.

so, i ask again, is this the correct bearing? and if so, at which end of the swing arm should it go? the end near the gearbox, or the end near the rear wheel?

from the schematic diagrams i have seen it is the bearing for the gearbox end which would seem logical that this one is making the noise.

Did you re-grease or just "nip up". Could be dry.
Best to replace anyway.

Bearings

Bearing in mind that the problem here bears on the haynes manual having some bearing on the bearing problem bear with the idea of getting a clymer manual. These really are the best many can bear this out and bearing in mind
they even tell you not to look inside the petrol tank with a naked flame!
Someone on here brought one from amazon in the us and with $9 dollars postage and a weeks delivery it was cheaper the the uk price.
bearing in mind the exchange rate it could have a benificial bearing on the future outcome of future maintenace.
dave (still bearing up)gs.

Calling Steptoe!!!

Following on from this thread, Steptoe did the last service on my bike about 2,500 miles ago. He spotted some play in the back wheel and adjusted it on what is described as the pivot bearing in the accompanying drawing.

Well I just put my bike through it's MoT and although it passed, the tester said there was play in the back wheel. When I got home, I checked, and sure enough, there is play. Not a lot, but I'd like to sort it before it gets worse. Is it likely to be the same thing again, or might it be the rear wheel bearings? There is no noise or oil leak at present. :augie

How many miles has the bike done?.
I have just replaced a paralever bearing for the same reason. It was adjusted a few weeks ago,but developed more play due to wear and notchiness.
Should have replaced BOTH bearings at the same time.:(
Saying that,it could also be an output bearing problem.
Depending on mileage,i would change all 3 bearings (output x 1 and paralever x 2) together while the bevel box is out.

Hi Colban,

If you mean me, then my bike has only done 13,500 miles :(

Wasn't too clear was it.
Yes,i was referring to your post.
Under 14K is a short life unless you have been offroading, going thru rivers etc.
May be worth re-checking the preload on the paralever bearings as the factory seems to overload them causing them to indent. If you feel any notchiness in them, best to replace.
Check out the steptoe thread for checking the big bearing.
Col.
