Guess it depends on how much you think breaking the bank is:D

My old Garmin 3+ gave up the ghost after five years hard labour last week. I wanted something similar and nearest equivalent was the Garmin V. It's got everything the 3+ had plus a few extra features including a routfinder for £260 from GPS warehouse.

I'm in a simliar boat ... having spent the last two days getting lost in France as a result of inept french signposting, Multimaps lack of detail, and the Gendarmarie stalking and fining me, I want a mobile GPS that can be switched between bike and car ... but mainly car use ...

What are the advantages of dedicated vs PDA versions .....

Any comments or ideas ?

As Ming says the Quest is a good deal at the moment if you can cope with the small screen and equally small buttons, I'd suggest from my breif play that winter gloves on use is a no no but its only. £350 for a colour screen, voice prompt, turn by turn navigation and 256MB internal memory. Also portable as it takes batteries.

All you'll need to add to that is a bike mount and bike power lead which together should be got for £30.

PDA's fine for car, especially if you already have a usable PDA as you'll only need to fork out for the sat nav kit like Tom Tom. But on a bike you'll need otter boxes in addition to bike mounts X2 and power lead and then its fiddly as fek to use, open otter box to make any changes.

THE GPS V that's been mentioned is a lovely bt of kit but you'll need to take your laptop with you on long trips to be able to upload detailed maps on the hoof, it only has 19MB of nternal memory, mono screen and no voice prompts but its still a favourite of mine and I really should get the one I'm staring at right now back to its owner :o

Once I've done that I think Ilkk have a little play with a Quest, always good to know a Garmin dealer ;)

If you're stretching to £350, stretch a bit further and get the 2610. Transfers from car to bike in seconds and a fantastic bit of kit.

I've got a SPII but I'd buy a Quest if I did'nt.

Its a question of the mapping license, Garmin hold the licence for all the best maps, so the other providers cannot use these maps they have to use some others which may not be as good, that's why the garmin''s are allways more expensive.

GPS

My Garmin GPS60CS is all ive wanted, its my thrid GPS and fits the bill, ive got it mounted on my bike, (1150GS) and in my car, it is also perfect for "on foot" adventures.
On the bike i have the external power lead and the remote antenna.
