PLEASE HELP - R1200GS WIND NOISE

Wind Noise

This thread has degenerated into a load of complete and utter nonsense.
:rob:rob:rob:rob

Schuberth are definatelty the way to go for a quiet lid, if only they did double D fasteners instead of those god awful ratchet fasteners  It baffles me why they don't make them with both, as surely there's a lot of people who prefer the Double D fasteners? :nenau

My Schuberth S1 Pro has double D fasteners :thumb2 It's also very quiet, the visor is mist and leak free and the vents work reasonably well.

As for screens, I've tried a GSA and a Givi 330 Airflow screen back-to-back and the GSA is good, but the Airflow is better and cheaper. Being able to adjust the height is a Godsend too - high in bad/cold weather, low in hot weather :beerjug:

Agh yes, the S1 does have double d ring as you say. Trouble is with that one is I found the chin part quite deep and it caught on the armour of my jacket when I turned my head. I must have a short neck :eek

Givi airflow plus winglets....visor up 90mph bliss. Using Shoei qwest which is the best price/quality/noise combo I have come across.

Cheers

Ear plugs.

+1

J.Bax, I've tried winglets, givi wide and high screen, torbinators, and laminar lip, nothing made much difference.

By a country mile good quality earplugs have a huge redusing effect on wind noise, but they must be correctly inserted, and used only a few times before throwing away, I use 3M 1110 Corded Foam Ear Plugs, and I paid 20 pound for a 100 sets at an insdustrial hardware store.

PS. Even my Schuberth S1, make little difference without plugs in.

I agree that earplugs are by far the best, and can't believe people ride without them. Don't they know it's damaging to the ear and they'll likely end up with tinnitus &/or deafness to some degree?

5'9", lowest seat setting, Givi Airflow + tobinators, screen laid back as far as poss, top slidey bit extended by a third. A vast improvement but not perfect

I am about 6'1 and use the top seat position and pretty much do same as above, but raise the screen abou half way for long runs and motorways, on warmer days I tend to drop it right down when on slower roads.

Wind noise is massively reduced, I can tell by lowering the screen a bit and then I can slouch down and have silence, or sit right up and get proper wind roar.

What never goes away is the buffeting, this is also a lower frequency "booming" noise so also less affected by earplugs than higher frequency wind roar.

I think the problem is how far away from the screen you are, if I lean in to screen (not all all day comfort position unfortunately) there is a silent bubble of air.

Arse up-head down sportsbike + tall screen will resolve the issue for you, assuming you can live with back ache, neck ache, leg cramps :blagblah

Earplugs are the first step of the solution (I always wear them) in conjunction with a quiet properly fitting helmet, but there is no doubt that a larger screen drastically reduces wind noise and buffeting on the standard GS :thumb2

Seems that these reports are all related to the GS. Can the airflpw be fitted to a GSA and if so has anyone done it? If so does it work well on the GSA, and what does it look like (Ipics would be great). From viewing pics of the Airflow on the GS it's not the prettiest screen to say the least :eek

You can fit the Airflow to the GSA but you need to remove the screen brace.

I tested a GSA with my GS seat on it, so the riding position should have been exactly the same, and the GSA screen was slightly noisier unless I ducked down an inch or two.

Remove the screen.

Andres

That's what i ended up doing too. I find though there is a still amazingly good wind (not insects :D) protection coming off the front of the bike. My helmet is now completely out of the turbulent flow, but i'm 6'4" and my seat is 50mm higher then std. As the bike looks no good w/o a screeen I have the wunderlich flowjet, but angled more than Wunderlich intended.

and earplugs - i can't, and/or don't want, to ride without them

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies.
Yes I do wear earplugs - always have done. I wear the Oxford Moldex ones.

The recurring issue seems to be that everyone suffers with something slightly different, hence one thing that works for someone, doesnt work for someone else!
I plan to try some of the Ultimate Earplugs http://www.ultimateear.com/motorcycle.htm, if they're good enough for Ewan and Charlie.......
Seems like a bottomless pit of money, to sort what perhaps BMW should have given more consideration to when producing a motorcycle designed to do big miles!
Appreciate the comments on helmets, I've borrowed a couple of lids AGV Stealth and Shark RSR, and found these no better. I cant wear Shoei either.

Seems like general concensus is:

Replacement Screen,
Winglets,
Earplugs,
Lid.

Or Buy a Car :pullface

[Benny Hill Chinaman Voice] Why you no listen stupid [Benny Hill Chinaman Voice]

Givi Airflow + Winglets = 90mph cruising, no ear plugs, very little buffeting :augie

All for £180. You can spend £350 on the adventure screen plus fittings if you want but it won't be as good.

Looks, subjective but I think it suits the GS. Sorta quirky:thumb

That that may indicate that BMW did..... They just didn't have something quite like you in mind when they sat down at the drawing board. Draw your own conclusions as to why :D

PS Not 'everyone' suffers with something ;)

This might the right thread to help solve a problem I have. I've noticed that when on my bike ('05 12, non-adv) and going round corners, it leans. Some people say this is because IT'S A BIKE NOT A CAR, but I'm sure there must be a solution.

your point is................

Whilst I agree to a point it does seem as though there is a big percentage that do have issues with the screen and maybe BMW could have done more to come up with a more universally 'approved' screen :nenau
