I was very disturbed to find my 6 month old 1200GSA has corrosion in many places after the winter, despite all the cleaning, ACF50 and being kept garaged overnight. I sent photos to my dealer who forwarded them to BMW, and I am waiting to hear what they are going to do about it. BMW put it down to prolonged salt exposure and asked what it was cleaned with and how often over the winter, so I suspect they are preparing an excuse for why its not their fault!

So I would like to know how mnay other people have had corroded parts replaced under warranty.

Please include bike model and year, mileage, where the corrosion was and what was repaced. I will start the ball rolling.

2008 1200GSA, 4200 miles. Corrosion on
both rear peg supports;
final drive around the hole, and rear edges top and underneath (edge of the silver painted bit where it meets the black painted bit);
horizontal bar on the centre stand;
rear wheel rim around the spoke holes and pitting all over the rim;
rear wheel hub around the spoke holes;
front wheel rim around the spoke holes;
front wheel hub at the joints with the brake disc;

I think that's it so far. I need to reomve the plastic engine cover and see what's underneath, sounds like that's another likely place.

Have BMW rejected your claim? I would be surprised if they did.

I've got some replacement looming inc rear wheel. Sent photos, all agreed within the hour.

You can't blame them for asking the question, just answer it honestly and all should be as it should be.

BMW are normally very good over this kind of claim:thumb2

Found rust on my crash bars on both sides on the top edge and on the rear sub frame around the exhaust bracket weld where there is no paint,noticed when cleaning the day after picking the bike up new from chester,told they'll look at it on service which is tomorrow[not there though],not keen on having a brand new bike taken apart so soon:eek:,had jap,italian,american and even russian bikes all new over the past 10 years [this is new bike 13:eek:]but never had anything as bad as this,love the bike though!

I had two front engine covers within the first two years under warranty. After the second cover was fitted I resolved the problem myself with preventative measures such as removing the foam and treating the plastic cover screw threads with a dielectric paint called 'starbrite' before reinserting (you can also use duralac) and a good spray of ACF-50 (Boeshield T-9 is better). Plenty of info about it all if you search the site.

Bahnstormer have just replaced the rocker covers on my 2007 GS. One had a fair amount of paint flaking on the leading edge but the other was just starting to go. They had a quick look at them and agreed to change them under warranty without so much as a phone call to BMW! :thumb2

I have a bit of corrosion on my GSA and I am waiting for an answer from BM for after submitting pictures to my dealer.
The bike is six months old with 3600 on the clock, it was ridden all through winter and treated to ACF 50, garaged and washed off when I could, (difficult when there is snow and ice outside).
The corrosion is on the final drive where yours is, the rear wheel where the spokes meet the rim and the nearside cylinder head.

Admittedly it's not great on a new bike but it:) was a harder winter than normal and highways used loads of new super sticky salt, (extra corrosive) but I'm sure BMW will replace the items.

It's still a great bike, (my second) and I'd buy another one and I have tried the KTM

As I type this my 2007 GSA (20000 miles) is in at Oxford having the front engine cover replaced under warranty due to corrosion.................top service yet again from the chaps at the dealership. :)

My 2007 1200 GS has just been in to North Oxford Garage for a 12000 mile service. I complained about corrosion just starting to appear on the front engine cover and final drive casing. Also rust pitting on the chrome exhaust header pipes which was brought to their attention about 9 months ago.
Front cover replaced without question.

Final drive CASING to be replaced. This entails NOG borrowing the special tools to rebuild the internals of my final drive into a new casing. Gears and bearings presumably. This 'fix' would carry no more warranty than the remainder of the bikes warranty. Being from an engineering background, I feel this fix is asking for future trouble.

Also, being a bit synical/sceptical, I am wondering if these replacement casings are secondhand ones that have been re-finished (powdercoated) locally. Perhaps someone can confirm or reject this theory.

Exhaust rejected. This bike has not seen salty roads and is washed and cleaned weekly. I also paid extra for the chrome system. NOG did have the pipes cleaned but the problem is still there. I have spoken with an ex plater and his opinion is that the plating is of poor quality.

One other complaint was that the Vario top case (fitted when new by NOG) is loose and rattling on the plate. I was told this was within spec, 'customer to monitor'

Had the bike looked at yesterday,new crashbars ordered but subfame paint may just be touched up,any thoughts?

GSA 06, 18k .Parts replaced due to corrosion:
Final drive and starter cover,front engine cover
Wheels rejected due to owner neglect. No amount of emails or solicitors letters could persuade BMW to change they er position. Still Bahnstormer done their best.

RT 05, 8K.
Front engine cover , rocker covers replaced.
Bike was out of warranty . Well done Vines.

Ive got a replacement front engine cover thats seen 1200 miles,and its
knackered already.

2008 bike, 11 months old, 10,000 miles. Final drive corrosion at the edge with the black bits...

Bike going in for a replacement LED rear light (the original one's letting in water). I'll mention the corrosion and see what the verdict is.

2005 1200GS.

It's on it's third engine cover. (This one looks fine for the time being - I smeared silicon grease all over the lower half of the bit covered by the black plastic cover.)

No other corrosion that i can see. My previous 1150GS needed the fork brace replacing, and the finish was starting to go on the final drive when I part-exchanged it.

I go to some effort (some would say too much effort!) to keep my bikes clean, and I've never left it after a salty ride without a damn good rinse.

Just been informed by BMW UK that they will replace the final drive and cylinder cover but they won't replace the wheel due to 'evidence of acid or alkaline substance'.
I cover 12000 a year and this is my third GS with spoked wheels which I have cleaned all exactly the same with the same products but this is the first problem I have had.

'evidence of acid or alkaline substance'.

Interesting. If they've found a substance then they should know if it's acid or alkaline. Ask them which it is and if they don't know tell them they're talking shite. Is the wheel the most expensive part?

02 1150 GS

front telelever forks and bottom yoke replaced due to excessive pitting corrosion. Work completed at Allan Jefferies, no questions asked. :thumb2

06 1200GSA

All crash bars replaced due to corrosion after first winter. Work completed at Allan Jefferies... again NO questions asked. :thumb2

09 1200GSA

As yet no corrosion :)

How long did they take to come back with this response? I sent the photos of my corrosion to the dealer just over a month ago and I am still waiting. They did ask what I cleaned the bike with and how often, looking for a get-out no doubt.

The response took about two months from my initial contact with my dealer.
The letter from BMUK said:
'The diagnosis from the technical manager is that there is evidence of an acid or alkaline substance which has run down the spokes, across the rim and down the tyre. The substance has stained the anodised finish of the rim and is the result of external influences.'

I do wash my wheels with cold water then use Muc Off and a brush to get the dirt off and then swill off with copious amounts of cold water. This is the way I have cleaned all my previous bikes with no issues but apparently Muc Off isn't good, (I didn't tell BMUK I use it) although it is recommended for motorcycles.
I could understand the refusal if I used washing up liquid and oven cleaner but I have only used bike specific products.
