Hi

New to this mapsource route finding so be gentle with me, when i plot all my waypoints for a route on the map, then using the edit tab find new route, highlight all my waypoints then plot route, the route direction plus little red arrowthat point the way are highlighted but the arrows face each other in certain parts of the route so it looks like i am coming back on myself, is this something i am doing wrong when plotting waypoints, do you have to zoom in close on map to make sure you are on correct side of road etc :nenau, Thanks for advice from those in the know

When I devise a route, I Highlight all the Waypoimts, right click this, and it gives me the option to create a route, so I click this.it then gives me all the waypoints under each other with little arrows to the left hand side.I then click on the starting Waypoint which highlights then click on the upward facing arrow to position the Waypoint at the top. I then highlight each Waypoint in order and click the correct arrow to put them in order, finishing with the finish Waypoint at the bottom.I then click on find route and up she comes.

Hi

Thanks for info, i can get a route calculated then shown on map,But the coloured route that has been plotted has little red arrows on it showing direction of travel, but in some of my sections of route the arrows face each other :nenau, anybody else had this

Almost certainly you have some of the wrong side of the road, zoom in and check

I find Tyre far eaier to use, I do all route planning on this as it is easier to add waypoints, drag route lines about, zoom in to each point to make sure it ain't up a small side road / wrong side of motorway etc

Once I have finished with it on Tyre I upload it to Mapsource to locate my Hotels / Fuel Stations etc. Also Mapsource can hold multiple routes in one file, whereas with tyre each route is a seperate file.

As it usees google maps it is also up to date and you can view relief and image data on your route as well - handy when looking at mountain routes.

This works well for me, and if your new to this you may find Tyre easier

PS It's free :thumb2

check your route preferences also e.g. if you have avoid toll roads checked and you set up a waypoint on a toll road , the route will continue to keep trying to leave that road.
can be an issue in austria for example where some of the best and well known roads are toll.

Depends on what you are used to, I use both but have used Mapsource for much longer. I still prefer it and as has been said it is more flexible. And I have this problem with google maps-the map for our village is just plain wrong it shows a road (of which there is no sign on the satellite view) which is not there and according to locals never has been there. Often a good way to judge a map is to look at an area you know well, when it fails this test I am reluctant to put much faith in it. Apart from that Tyre is very useful for converting my routes for those people using TomTom devices.

Have a look here for a short Mapsource tutorial that I put together earlier this year after being asked how to plot routes in Mapsource for the umpteenth time. Hope it's of some use to you.

I use various tools in creating my routes, not Tyre but ITN Converter gets used along with Mapsource. However, the latter is always best as a sanity check as saving a GPX file from Mapsource includes many more routing nodes than the same route from one created in TYRE or ITN Converter to ensure that the route is executed as intended. Just create the same route in both your favoured alternative routing tool and Mapsource, now open them in a text editor and check the difference.

The end of development of Mapsource, as it now stands, and the advent of Basecamp as Garmin's routing tool of choice is a worrying turn of events. Basecamp, IMHO, isn't as useful though it's maybe a little more user friendly which is maybe where Garmin are coming from trying to give it wider apeal :(

Yes - I've fallen foul of this and always double check I've not stuck a way point on the wrong side of a duall carriage way .... :thumb

Have just fitted my Zumo 660 and have been doing some research on here trying to get to grips with Mapsource. Just wanted to say thanks for putting that youtube clip on I found it very helpful :thumb2
