you are having a laugh, I dont think I ever rode the same bike two days running, we had the normal 3 shifts a day, and the bikes would be out with a different rider each 8 hours, they were run ragged

Most of us "County Mounties" have our "own bikes", which I appreciate is not the same as at a Met. Garage, but they're still pretty worn out when disposed of - which taxpayers would surely wish; get your taxpayers money out of them, then sell them before a big bill comes in.

We've got a fleet of 08 FJR1300's... now we don't have a dedicated bike section sometime's they're standing for a week or two without turning a wheel... to give you an idea they're on around 14k at the moment :rolleyes:

Saying that the bikes are kind of 'personal issue' in as much as if I'm on duty no one will take 'my bike' without asking first ... and 99% of the time I'll only ride that one .

They get a hard life when they're out , but I'm impressed with how they cope :thumb
 
On all my police chases the arse used to get caned out of the police bikes.

We (London Ambulance) have 2 full time bike mechanics and what they don't know about 11 & 1300 pans really isn't worth knowing. I was looking for a winter commuter and thought I might take a look at ex public service bikes. One of the mechanics tagged along with me and said he was horrified at the state of some of the ex plod bikes. There's a good reason they move them on and that's cos they're generally shagged!
MOD bikes can sometimes be a good buy but again you really don't know the Hx.
I think that in the past, when bikes were simpler to maintain and repair (and police forces had more money to spend on their fleet) an ex plod bike would be a viable option. Modern bikes, especially the RT are maybe too complicated for the laymen in his garage.

FWIW I wouldn't touch an ex LAS bike with a barge pole!

I bought an ex-Lothian & Borders J-reg. K100LT with the single seat and Craven type radio box and panniers. It was well worn. I used it to commute a 104 mile round trip.
It sat low, everything was just worn. The fibreglass in the edges of the lids was down to a fine, thin edge from the vibration. Sounded like a coffee grinder.
It's finest hour was coming back up through Fife, mebbe 20 miles after the kincardine Bridge to find L&B's boys having a break in a training run 'abroad'. Every one looked as it went past.
But it was cheap and I got shot of it as I couldn't be bothered sorting the gearbox which was filling up with water off the road.
I'd get another, such as the RTs that turn up at M/Works or on eBay but don't pay only £200 less than some minter that an old boy's cossetted for years!
 
I bought police bikes as part of making a living from 1988 up until the last one i bought which would be around 2003.

Condition would depend on what force it was coming from. For some reason manchester police force bikes were sheds, that includes patrol and surveillance bikes.

The met bikes were never high mileage, and the non runners used to fetch peanuts -Cheapest i ever bought was £60 for an 8 year old R80RT, had a broken clutch pushrod, £5 to fix.

Cumbria police had a couple of R100RT's i bought that had 12K miles on them. Had a few from North wales, including a "learner" R45RT with 5k miles on it.

I used to travel all over the country and the bikes would go through with the commercial vehicles during the day.
I stopped going when they started putting them through the auctions at West oxford motor auctions, witney. They held them on a thursday evening and advertised in the MCN so every man and his dog used to turn up and pay silly money for them.

Still a couple of forces that put them through commercial auctions but not in any great numbers to make it worthwhile chasing around.

And you'd be amazed what other bikes ( and cars) that the police use :augie.

I once bought a couple of norton rotary interpols, one from swansea, and the other from birmingham, also had a police honda VT500, CX500, FJ1100, a customs and excise undercover GT550 (which had a frame number completely different to what was in the log book, took 6 weeks to sort out, ended up with my money back and allowed to keep the bike for all the bother :D).

Kent police once sold off 30 blue kawasaki Z200 bikes fitted with rickman full fairings and panniers, there were only 3 of us interested in the bikes so we bought ten each, paid around £80 each. And the pannier keys were missing on some bikes, i forced open the panniers when i got home and they all had police jackets, breathalysers, rolls of police "accident tape", and lots of other pollis paraphernalia :D.
Kent police also had some moto guzzi G5 models with full fairings, and kent police vehicles used to be painted lime green. When they auctioned off the guzzis they'd sprayed the fairings white. But not nicely. it looked like thay'd chucked a sheet over the tank, bars and screen and just stood back and sprayed away. The fork legs, parts of the front wheel were a nice shade of white. I still bought two of them though.

Had more than a few police bikes with no frame or engine numbers :confused:, so always best to check.

And if your buying from an auction and there are a few bikes available, always buy the first one through the auction. They fetch higher prices as the auction goes on and the number of bikes get less . ;)

I bought an ex police pan euro from Fife police. 03 model with 28k on it. The plice service record read Encyclapedia Brittanica. Serviced every 4k, any rattles in between were sorted with new parts , new brake pads every 2500miles and it had an amazing 14 sets of tyres fitted.
Down side were a few holes in the fairing sides where switches had been fitted. The wiring was a mess where equiptment had been just cut off,
( leaving a fused 50 amp supply wire to short on the frame!!!), and the alternator failed a week later.
Having said that , since it's been sorted it'sbeen a 100% reliable bike at half the price.

a mate of mine bought an ex sussex police K1100LT earlier this year 52k runs like clockwork and rides well.

must have been one of the well looked after ones:)
 
Race the train.....

Three years as Regional Crime Squad surveillance motorcyclist ... now they were the days :rob

Had to beat a train twice, and on one occasion a helicopter from South Yorkshire's Clay Wheels Lane Depot to Hemsworth in West Yorkshire :eek:

It beat us by two minutes :blast

Always a challenge that one. Bugger gets on in centre of Birmingham, stays on at the NEC, next stop London. Inter city 125s go quite well!

Had a ZZR1100 'follow' bike at one stage. Had a few days in Telford so got it 'warmed up' as it were on the M54. Got into a nick in Telford to hear a briefing by a Traffic Gaffer on how they planned to catch the two big black bikes seen 'warming up' on the M54 on recent mornings.:augie

Strange they never clocked them parked in the back yard!:blast

Would NEVER have purchased one of our surveillance bikes. They would tick over for hours then get seriously caned.

Surveillance once had us follow a train from Sheffield to Buxton ... the target was recently out of prison and going to recover some buried goodies :thumb

We had a man on the train, the rest of the team doing their best to keep up :eek:

Our expectations were high, the information correct ... so it seemed :)

Except a whole new pedestrian footway had been built while he'd been at the convenience of Her Majesties best ... right where he'd buried the bloody stuff :blast

After scratching his head for half an hour, and pacing up and down, he caught the next train home :censor:

The local Trafpol garage recently sold 2 DRZ400's that as far as i know were barely used and i did at the time think about taking a punt on one as i knew they had never been used on the road and all the panels were spot on without the usual off road drop dings....... fancied it as a winter hack but they were trying to flog them out for close to normal 2nd hand prices.

I wouldnt touch an ex surveillance bike for all the reasons already given as they generally go from idle to thrashed silly for long periods.........they normally have unusual (for most sports bikes) extras like GPS wiring and heated grips already fitted. From memory the local ones were CBR1000 replaced by a couple of ZX10's

As for train racing i have done it a few times by car (unmarked bog standard Mondeos with no blues or sirens to help :rolleyes:) Did one run with a brand new Sgt (never been on a train race) in the passenger seat who was physically shaking when we got to the other end having beaten the train by 3minutes on a mixture of town, rural and dual carriageway roads .............. he even asked for a cigarette at the end although someone said he had given up 4 years previous :D

I didnt see what the problem was and the lads in the back seat ready to be punted out on foot were grinning throughout :)

No I don't have any as I have always kept on the right side of the law - ever since I was caught speeding on my motorbike by a fellow motorcyclist, a policeman on a Rudge Ulster, can you imagine! I was on a 500cc BSA A7 - that was on July 4th 1947 and was my last motorcycle conviction. ( I did 100mph on a local road recently just to celebrate my 80th birthday ....but no one is going to believe that;)
 
Not particularly amusing but.... there was a guy where I worked who's preference for warming a bike up from cold at 7am in winter was to switch it on, press the starter and rev it to the redline for a minute.

He also had a penchant for riding round T square deliberately causing backfires. The effect on the pidgeons apparently amused him. Of course he wasn't standing underneath them as they '*hat themselves'.

Other sillies include watching one bright spark driving the Marina TC down a local boat ramp 'just because' on nights thinking he could reverse out...er no:blast

They don't float and the blue lights look like a UFO has landed and sunk. That took some explaining..
