Tried searching, but not found anything relating to the F650GS.

When I took the dealer demonstrator I thought I hear a few pops and a bang on overrun but thought was wrong.

Now I have my new F650GS it is definitely doing a few pops on overrun sometimes, and occasionally a bit more than a pop.

Is this normal ?

erm yes ! :thumb2

I bought mine with a akropovic can fitted had quite a few pops and now and then a louder one.

since fitted remus headers with no cat to the akro, now get far fewer pops but I do get them! (but more deeper exaust rort :D)

But in any event what i,m led to beleive is for it to happen it is a very healthy and efficient thing for your engine (the small bang theory) :blast

Both our F650 and F800 pop occasionally, mainly when we open up to run on very small throttle openings after a long period of deceleration with the throttle closed. Its probably a zone in the fuel mapping which has not been sorted fully allowing a bit of fuel rich/oxygen starved gas to mix with the air at the silencer exhaust joint and igniting.
It dose not happen often and after the shock of the first few occasions has not caused any problems.
If your is more frequent you may need to get the fuel system, lamba probe and mapping checked.

I think that popping on the overrun is indicative of leaks in the exhaust. I can't recall my 650 twin ever popping on the overrun in 18k miles, but it had the OEM headers and end can.

Bike is stock, and brand spanking new, noticed a couple of times on a 220 mile cross country blast yesterday. The louder pop once.

Seemed to be after a clear blat, then changing down for a roundabout using engine braking.

Will raise it when it goes for 600 mile service.

I have found popping on overrun to be both normal and pleasant. My F650GS is now over two years old. It popped slightly with the original can and much more so with a Leo Vince can. Part of the issue is air leaking into the front of the can and silicon sealant can fix this easily (described somewhere in these pages of wisdom). It still pops occasionally on slight throttle after decelerating, as described above.

Everything is fine.

My 800GS does it when slowing and dropping a gear e.g. with high engine RPM and with very slightly opened throttle, and with the Beowolf fitted it's even better/louder!!!!!!!! Sorry officer that should read, unfortunately it does it even more with a straight through exhaust box fitted with the baffle removed which is a bugger!!!

Hi, i took my das on brand new F650 Gs and this popped more than once or twice. I now have an F800 GS and this does the same occasionally, generally when coming off the throttle but not closing it fully. If its not regular i dont think its much to worry about.

I experimented a bit over the weekend, If I coast down a hill under engine braking with the throttle closed its OK. If I do the same and open the throttle a small amount I can force a pop from the exhaust.

They pop the same as the 1200's because they run very lean, get a pcv and auto tune and get the a/f ratio optimized:thumb2

I thought the popping was part of the character - and as long as the popping did not cause any parts of the engine to fly out of the exhaust, no bad thing!

All very reassuring, thanks everyone.

I can enjoy the pops and occasional louder pop safe in the knowledge the cat ain't going to end up splattered on my mate.

Gives it much more character than his Tiger :)

Coming out of the garage

I`m a popper too,and I dont care who knows it!
Leo Vance has something that tunes the pops and burbles to something approaching the music of the Gods.Thank you Mr.Vance :hug

Come on guys!!!!!! Popping, back fires etc is ment to happen, If you notice that your end can is held together with springs then that should be an indication that the complete system is not air tight and nor should it be. On the over run a minute ammount of unburnt fuel will travel along the exhaust and when it meets entrained air becomes just the right mixture to ignite causing a miniture explosion POPPING !!!!!

Try riding a big single and you will realy notice it,

i personally think it sounds great and is how the engine should respond,
sealing the joint where the springs are located:mad: no no no

Enjoy
