Hello all, we are heading south through Portugal along the coast. We have booked our first night in Llanes as we will be arriving mid afternoon. I would appreciate any suggestions from there regarding places to visit, roads and routes, hotels etc. We don't want to over plan things but it's good to have some options. What have you got? Many thanks in advance.

Llanes? You sure that's right?

Llanes is lovely. When I went to Porto a few years ago I went from somewhere near Llanes over to Navia on the coast for a few days. Stayed in https://www.hotelpalaciodelosnavas.com/en/ - some great roads including the AS12 along the Rio Navia gorge. From there I rode across to NE Portugal and to the coast at Viana do Castelo. Stayed a night in the Pousada overlooking the bay https://maps.app.goo.gl/g9Wa8jC86VwRJnD99 From there I went to Porto for a few days and that was as far south I went.
Last year, I did stay in Llanes at Hotel Montemar. Then headed SW across the national parks to stop in Ponferrada at the Ponferrada Plaza hotel. Lovely town surroounded by great roads in Asturias to the north and Castille y Leon to the south.
I can recommend Ponferrada or Navia as places to stop overnight or better, a few days to explore the area. Asturias in general is fabulous. So many good roads, so little traffic.

Absolutely appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience.

I am a cider enthusiast, Asturias is right up my street on that level. I noticed a cideria on the map when looking at the location of our hotel in Llanes, I will definitely be checking that out.

By the way Wessie I know you are no stranger to cider from your experience of the Yew Tree in Peterstow

Not quite Lanes as a Start but this is my route from Cangas De Narcea south into Portugal

Some fantastic roads on this route in particular the road south from Ponferada

The road along the Douro Valley is also superb

Happy to send you the whole shebang as GPX if you wish

Not sure if you want to follow the coast all the way but I’d recommend cutting the far west out as it’s a bit built up .

The AS12 south out of Navia is a stunning road . Then head for Lugo then Vigo .
Both are lovely , especially Lugo as it’s a walled city .

several Sidrería in Llanes. I ate in one that had good reviews on Google Maps but I was underwhelmed by the food. The bean stew was a bit bland. Cider was okay. Restaurante Sidrería SALERO but no shortage of alternatives especially along the older part of the harbour and a several little plazas in the old town
