I am so confused.

Zumo arrived today so I've been playing with it and had it all working fine - music and everything! Except...

Connecting the power cable to a BMW socket and plugging it in by my left knee is fine. Red wire (positive) to centre pin of plug, which I'm sure is the positive one.

However, I also have a little socket permanently attached directly to the battery terminals which I use for a battery charger. I had intended to use this for the sat nav. This works fine with the battery charger, by the way, and it would tell me if I had the polarity wrong. But when I connect the zumo power cable to that socket (using the correct plug, obviously) connecting the red wire to the positive battery terminal, nothing. When I reverse the polarity - which I did just out of curiosity - it seems to work ok. This means the in-line fuse is on the negative outut from the battery.

Am I missing something riculously obvious?

Used it in the car today, and it is really impressive. Re-calculation is so much quicker than previous sat nav (Quest 2) and I love the 3d display.

However, it isn't giving me street names in the direction - it is still saying "turn right" rather than "turn right into Cherry Garden Lane." Do I need to do something to make it do this?

Someone please answer my questions, or there's a chance I may have to start reading instructions... (Plus, I know Blues and Twos has just got his new one so he'll be waiting for answers too!)

Got my Zumo yesterday and like you I'm very impressed - my wife is particularly impressed by the different accents she can get on the voice prompts!

Mine gives me street names when turning and I didn't have to do anything at all so not sure whats wrong with yours :nenau

I've put in a postcode to seach for the address but it is coming up with a different road, albeit in the same town - I've re-checked the post office postcode finder and it is correct :nenau

Wiring to the varadero tomorrow - in the absence of the BMW configuration I'm just wiring direct to the tail light as I did with the quest.
Re-calculation is much quicker, graphics are sharper too :thumb2

I think your wee plug may be wrongly connected, the charger may sense the wrong polarity and have the ability to overcome the prob and charge normally?

It's possible you have one of the non TTS voices set as your active voice. Look in the menus for 'Language' and then 'Voice Language' (that's what it is on my 2720), if you have 'British English' selected then that's your problem, select 'British English - Emily' or 'British English - Daniel', these have (TTS) at the end, this stands for Text To Speech.

That was my initial thought, but I've connected the red wire from the socket to the positive terminal, which connects to the red wire from the charger. :nenau If I connect the charger the wrong way round it tells me with a warning light, so it clearly matters.

I have set aside several hours tomorrow morning to investigate fully (when I have found my Ladybird Book of Electricity!).

Spot on - thanks! I now have Emily loaded and will give it a go in the morning.

Connection sorted! Who'd have thought that for identical sockets, there isn't an accepted standard that positive goes to one side and negative to the other?

However, that doesn't alter the fact that I asked a mindless question based on stupid assumptions. Please don't ever speak of it again. :blast

The quality and clarity of the TTS voice isn't as good as the non-TTS voice. But I was very impressed with her pronunciation.

Yes a touch robotic but not too bad. As you say pronunciation is pretty good. We're off to Spain in a couple of months, will be interesting to see how she copes with that. Another excuse for SWMBO to deride the GPS no doubt.
