Power issue ?

BMW 2009 GSA

1. When I filled it up with petrol, the gauge said I was empty.

2. On motorway driving if I get up a steady speed about 70 mph she begins to lose power like she is fuel starved, the more power I give the more she struggles to maintain power.

3, low power back roads she is fine.

Not sure what all dat adds up to ???

Any thoughts ??

Telling you something?? Calm down and ride at sensible speeds enjoying the scenery?

Likely to be something in the fuel system as you suggest but they are so complicated these days that its a dealer job with plug in computers to diagnose the precise fault.

Is it road speed or engine speed related? i..e if you drop down a gear at 65 does it happen in 5th?

If the symptom istarting above 4-4.5K RPM it could be primary coil beaking down under load, or just a naff spark plug? Despite all the clever electrickery it is still susceptible to basic problems.

Could also be a faulty fuel pump failing to supply enough pressure, or a fuel pressure regulating valve stuck wide open returning too much fuel back to the tank.

It's from 4.5k revs only happens on motorway when at motorway speeds. Missed a heart beat sometimes like it had a small air bubble in fuel and gives a small backfire.

I would hazard a guess at the primary coils or plugs on the way out. They have a finite life, coild issues are quite common.

The primaries are the same left and right, do you know anyone locally that you could borrow a known good coil from? The primaries are the same as R1150GS series, 1150 RS, RT, R and Rockster, R1200 S, ST, R, RT, HP2, R1100S and the R900RT...

I have some old coils that I have swapped out as a 100K treat. I could post you my old primaries to try. If it makes it better you know where the problem lies, but I would not bank on using them long term.

Once your done, pop them back to me so I can use them for similar purposes, or lend to others for same.

Hi, I left it in to bmw dealer. They putmin a set of coils with no improvement. So put themoldmones back in. Then I got them to put in new sparks and a new air filter. Definite improvement but still the problem is there. Dealer says they ran diahnostic and cant find anything wrong but agree there is amproblem ! Eejits

If you're going to get the dealer to fix it I'd be tempted to get them to do a service. They're likely to check alot of the things included in trying to find the fault. If nothing shows up on the diagnostics then they're going to have to do it the old fashioned way. Get their hands dirty.

I'd suggest trying the simple things first, such as changing the fuel pump controller, throttle position sensor etc.

I've just had a very similar problem to yours and mine was the coil. Would pull to about 4 thousand revs, but as soon as I opened the throttle the bike held back and ran rough.
