OK, I'm confused with all these posts about power to a 2610 or Quest.

Both units come with a power lead using cigar lighter type plug. I take it that the BM aux socket is not a cigar lighter type and and a conversion of some sort is needed?

So what else will I need to buy and why should I need a special mount if I buy the GPSW bundle including the bike mount?

And..... I've read the Quest will run off batteries for about 5 hours (useful if you're walking or using it on a pushbike). Is it possible to simply switch it on only when you need it and not lose your programmed route?

Cheers

You are correct about the BM Aux socket. You can get and/or make an adaptor. However, in the GPSW bundle (and most of the motorcycle kits), you get a special combined power / audio cable. This is basically a lead with a special connector for the Quest / 2610 on one end, and wires to connect to the battery on the other, plus a wire to connect to your intercom, should you have one. You can then save the standard lead with the ciggy connector for use in the car, should you be unfortunate enough to have to drive such a vehicle.

It certainly is possible. The routes (of which you can store a number) are all selectable, and you can stop and start navigation at will. When you are navigating a route, if you turn the Quest off, when you turn it on later, it just picks up where you let off.

This was invaluable on a recent French tour, where I'd pre programmed the route for each day. While travelling for the day, if you want to stop for a break (fag, comfort, coffee lunch etc) turn off the quest when not needed, turn it on when you want to travle and it continues as if you'd never been away.

Hope this helps.

If, like me, you use the backlight a lot then you're looking at a battery life of 5-6 hours. If you don't use the backlight then it's more like the 20 hours claimed in the adverts.

I've got a powered garmin mount hooked up to the bike battery and it's much better for my peace of mind :)

Dick,

GPSW does offer a 2610 bundle with the RAM mount and GA9 cradle plus a Garmin power lead 010-10495-02 as a full kit and the RAM mount will anchor onto the handlebarsof your GS. There are numerous pics in the Forum as well as those on the RAM UK picture gallery from bikers (in general) and GSer's.

The GPSW Quest bundle has the GPS with a RAM mount and GA15 cradle. QPAC is the GPSW 'branded' product that will power Quest using the RAM GA15 cradle. I accept everyone has a personal preference towards the mount being used whether its RAM with GA15, or RAM with TT or RAM with Garmin, some are happier than others. One key point is that the RAM mount has a ball joint system which absorbs vibration and shock - an important issue - regardless of the bike.

There is also a power-saver mode, which along with having the light switched off, should give you a very long battery life.

Press [Menu] twice, go into [System Setup], in GPS Mode, select [Battery Saver]. This causes the Quest not to try to connect to satellites quite as frequently as it normally does.

Good news about the battery life as I'll be using off without a power supply. I've just ordered the Quest bike bundle from GPSW so expect a few more questions :D

Thanks again guys.

Cheers
