powering an autocom

Have you had the "update" to the "battery drain software update" yet? When BMW issued the first software update it wasn't written very well and caused all sorts of problems with the CANBUS system and auxiliary socket. The later re-issued version cured the problems with the auxiliary socket turning itself on and off (more off than on though).

Another possible cause is that possibly the Zumo internal battery 'floats' on the 12Volt supply, and will charge up when it is a bit low. By drawing a charge it may overload the 12 volt power socket wiring and the CANBUS will shut down electronically to protect the bikes wiring (like a fuse but without blowing). You could try charging the ZUMO fully before fitting to the bike and see if that makes any difference.

Either that or the ZUMO internal battery voltage does something to the sensing circuitry within the CANBUS, tricking it into shutting down ??

You could ask AUTOCOM if they have any experience of this, they seem very knowledgeable about their products and offer good support.

Don't believe so but i've an '06 bike. I'm due a service in 2 weeks so I'll check with bmw then.

This may well be the case although the battery is well charged anyway and it still happens, seems to be better off with less power rather than more.

I'll talk with Autocom on Monday and see if they have ever come across this problem.

Is there anyone with a similar configuration that does not experience this problem??

The autocom connection is good on your bike because it has no power of its own,, You should connect your Zumo power cable Direct to the battery and fused with its own 1ish Amp fuse, this will not then confuse the cambus system and stay on,.
This system works and stops the zumo going back on battery power when you turn the ignition off and keeps the zumo charged up for off bike operation.:)

Just an idea,, If you rearly want the gps turned off with the ignition?, then connect your zumo to the battery via a relay.
You can turn on the relay from a connection off the power socket as before.:)

Geoffrey,

I assume you don't mean straight onto the +ve terminal of the battery, any recomendations?? Are there any risks with having a cable directly off the battery exponsed to the weather (when the gps is not connected)?

You have only got 12 volts which is protected by the zumos 1 amp fuse, so no real danger of anything going wrong, especially if you used the bike mounts connections rubber protector.(weather cap ).
look in the manual and it suguests you wire it this way.

well just to finish this off. I have had my bike serviced and the latest software download and Pukmeister hit the nail on the head (so to speak), following the software upgrade the power now comes back on after I start the engine. There is still a little issue with the software, the power to aux socket will not switch off until I either remove the GPS or switch it off, but ?I can live with that. Thanks for all the help.

Off now to celebrate a wonderful result in the 6 nations (well for Ireland anyway)

Glad you got a result with the bike and congratulations in the Rugby.:aidan

An Historic event and from where I saw it, the best side won the day.

Celebrating ??
