Pre-Paddys day, galway rideout 10th of March oughterard

Is there a plan for Sunday?

I'm planning to head off from Oughterard in the morning & head Maam Cross, Leenane, Westport, Louisburgh, Sheefry Hills, Leenane again, Lough Nafooey, Tourmakeady, (maybe back as far as Westport) and home.

All welcome :bounce1

Are you planning offroad stuff on that run Jockser? If you're not, I'll tag along if you dont mind.

The weather forecast isn't so hot for saturday. In any event I got out for a run after riding out to work in clidfen yesterday. The weather was atrocious one minute and the sun shining the next. Didn't really affect off the road. Went checking access point etc. Another one of the runs will have to be a circuit becuase the far access point, from which I intended to exit has been pretty well blocked up to stop skobies from joy riding, crashing and dumping cars. It is possible to get in and out so long as you are careful but people may prefer to ride round. You will see it yourselves when we get there.

I was accompanied yesterday by Mr. Barry, a local tosser who will be with us. I was following him along the road, a little distance behind, as usual, when after rounding a corner, I see the remains of a BMW top box on the road and no sign of barry. My first thoughts were that the bike had disappeared into the bog. I searched and couldn't fine either bike or the bold Barry. Major releif to hear akrapovic (?) coming back along the road. Moral of the story, back box to be left somewhere else.
The ride was absolutely fantasic even in the shitty weather. The rain even cleaned the bike. If i could only go to and from work like this every day!

The day ended on a sour note. On the road back down towards Barry's, and in an area with no mobile coverage, the brakes went. I limped, gear braking towards oughterard. I just made contact with Keary's before their switchboard closed at six.My bike had to be recovered from outside oughterard because of electrical gremlins which effectively left me without brakes, :nenau , dangerous driving without brakes. Either way Kearys in Cork assurred me a replacement of some description will be with me today thursday pm. better be a gs.

Lot of grief with the guy on the end of the phone for BMW breakdown. You have to do this directly apparently, the dealer cannot do it for you. When I called the breakdown service, gave him reg number, then chassis number, my 06 bike not even one year old, but it is not registered on the system. he wanted me to wait until today to have bike collected or to have me conveyed the 40 miles home. (No chance). He wanted to know whether the bike was a diesel and or an automatic??? I gather it is a contracted out service. BMW should be doing some quality control testing on this service. If the service centre guy had his way I could be stuck in the middle of a mountain overnight while he waited to check with the dealer this am as to whether or not the bike was covered. Fortunately, even though it was well after 6, we were able to contact Conor McRory, BMW Ireland current Motorrad manager, courtesy of Barry and I was rescued. Moral, if you have a bike that still "enjoys" break down cover call the service to confirm that it is registered. The warranty and breakdown cover is one of the reasons why I spent a small fortunes on this new bike.

Anyway otherwise all set for saturday. Bring spare gloves, good waterproofs. Don't mind the weather otherwise, it will only add to the experience. I see johnny pan is heading out on the road sunday, he might call and see us Saturday evening or join us for a bite! Hoping to have someone to collect any luggage on saturday morning and convey it to the hotel before we head off otherwise we will be doubling back abit, but if i can't it isn't that far over and back. Safe riding. Any one else want to join us, it is never tooo late, About 130 kms for the day, approx 40 on trails, great scenery!!

Betcha it's gonna be a Boxer Cup :D

Bummer about your own bike :( Hopefully it won't take them too long to get it sorted. No idea at this stage what happened or what caused it :nenau

Less than 24 hours after my baby was taken from me, a guy looking decidedly lost pulls up outside my house with a recovery vehicle, wife praying he has come to take my classic shape saab 900 which i will of course one day restore, whats on the back?, can you believe it, a 07 wx gsa1200:D :D :D There is even a shamrock on the box. hopefully it is a lucky shamrock, roll on saturday. just been out for a spin for an hour. It is a big beast. anyone know anything about the seats in the touratech catalogue, especially "kahedo Line seat"extra low part no .0055-1506?

Don't worry about the height... We're well practiced in picking you up when you fall over..

Don't know about the TT seat but the BM low seat off the 'classic' 12 will fit. I imagine a dealer would supply one instead of the std. seat free gratis, even on a secondhand bike ;)

Lookin' forward to tomorrow (& sod the weather) :bounce1 :bounce1

Sorry.. couldn't resist...
I've got a set of TKC's at home but no time to get them fitted... So I reckon I'll be the one on me ar$e with my bald Anekees

Short update. We will meet at 10.30 Galway and head firstly to Sweeney's in Oughterard to drop off the luggage. Anyone just out for the day might wanna wait until 11.15 odd at Kineavys in Rosscahil/Killanin, the pub on the right hand side between Moycullen and Oughterard, because our first venture off road will be from there> i.e. we will be doubling back a little from Oughters, See you all then. safe trip down.

Wet, windy and eventful

Wet, windy, long runs on empty forestry tracks. Visors were useless, it wasn't raining hard enough for the water to run off.
Two offs, one spectacular, minor damage, no injury, major recovery. The other, a low speed tumble in the middle of Clifden by yours truly, some scrapes on the bike and and some bruises.
Then we went to the seasside near Cleggan and some of the big boys went to play on the sand.
The sea was a pale baby blue, the sands were golden and on a warm, sunny day it would have been tempting to stop and laze. On a cold, wet, windy March day, it wasn't.
A long run back through Maam Cross to Sweeney's in Oughterad - a nightmare ride in the twilight, into the night. Rain, wind, useless visors, oncoming traffic leaving you blind, riding into the unknown, twisting unremembered roads, following the tail light.
Dinner and criac followed.

Others will post more details and pics.

My thanks to DeCrowe

Pity about the weather, being able to see the countryside would have added a lot to the run but i hope you enjoyed the runs nonetheless. next time perhaps only three long runs and then the beach or else we will do it when there is more light. I am happy every one survived it ok. sorry i had to slip off early yesterday but I had an important family event I couldn't not attend. good to meet you all. I will chase Higgie for the photos as i know that he being "david bailey", probably has a hundred shots. I think the beach would be a great place for GS polo!!
Special thanks to Kevin Barry for showing me the light and to Gerry C for making it possible by giving me the low seat to fit on the adventure kindly provided by Kearys Motorrad Cork( from whom I will soon want commission) See some of you in donegal.:aidan
