Primus rally Norway

I know. :thumb2

But seriously - I did the Nordkapp thing in May 2002 (and ended up spending 5 weeks in a tent north of the Artic Circle). Given this is a lot further south, but also a lot earlier in the year, just how much colder should I expect this camp to be?

Ah, you have been over here before. You speak perfect Norwegian, then! ;)
If you have trouble to get something out of this http://www.yr.no/sted/Norge/Hedmark/Ringsaker/Kise_målestasjon/statistikk.html I'll help you translate.

As you can see from that it is hard to tell:
You can get +10c, rain, no snow. Or a lot of snow melting in a short time. (Not most likely.)
Or you can get -25c (or colder!), much wind, no snow. How to make a tent not collapse? (Not most likely.)
Or 30-130 cm snow, -5c at daytime, -15c at night, sun, no wind. (Most likely.)
Or snowing at -2c all the time, and you better remove snow from your tent often to prevent it collapse, and all your things get lost in the snow if you can't remember where you putted it.

Some pictures for you: http://www.mc24.no/article.php?articleID=2726&categoryID=6 This is normal. That much snow, and not snowing, is the best.

The weather at Primustreffet, Bjoneroa, right now: http://www.yr.no/sted/Norge/Oppland/Gran/Bjoneroa/

Didn't she shack up with some old fat German 'fan' ...........you should send her 10,000 fan letters a year, you could be next :D if that appeals to you.

Me, I am happy with my MacPac Olympus, my Optimus Nova and my wife. But then I have experience of artic camping with all of the above, and I have a funny feeling that you (in the longstanding tradition of UKGSER) are recommending things that you have a)Never Used and b)Recommending things that you have NEVER USED for use in places/conditions that you have NEVER been to/in.

Feel free to correct me......

Yeah ok then I will!:D

I've never been to The Nordkapp twice in late may 03/07, Russian border at Kirkenes 07 again in late May was around -5 C. but the tent was warm enough. Took four days riding from Stavanger.

Never crossed the Arctic circle either on my HP2 with my missus on her F650GS 08 on her first tour before riding to my friends farm in 'northern Sweden' again camping. Again three days but from Haugesund in late May in 0 C.

Never been to Iceland twice on my 'old' GSA 05/06 with my missus camping and had to wait for the snow to be cleared before we could leave the ferry port at Seydisfjordur(do you know it?) again in late May then brewing our first tea from a small burn at the summit of the Heradsfloi pass but had to break the ice to get the water.

Never been to Iceland in November three times 01/02/05/06/10/11/12 and driven the entire ringroad on snow with snow studs and blizzard conditions in both car, 4x4 and even Quadbike both on the Vatnajokull Icecap but that was with ICE-SAR(Icelandic Search and Rescue) so that wouldn't really count because my 'best' Icelandic friend is an ICESAR Captain(Eskifjordur)

Never cycle toured 1100 miles in Iceland 11/12 again in May camping but somewhat curtailed by the fact that another friends farm was directly underneath the Eyjafjallajokull 2010 eruption and helped with the aftermath of that. 0-10 C.

Second cycle tour last May was in the middle of the aftermath of last years Grimsvotn volcanic eruption again in the 'ashstorms' of Skeidarasandur. 0-10C

Never been over the Langjokull Icecap 06 in early November with IcelandRover/ICESAR either. -10C.

Oh and never been contracted to East Lothian Council to recover snowploughs when they get stuck and open roads for the locals with my JCB either but that's another story because that's Scotland and we don't get any snow up here............!0- -15C.

Never used any of the following either........

Vango Force 10
Vango Hydra 200+
Mountain Hardware Sprite

Trangia Meths Stoves

Thermarests

Mountain hardware sleeping bags

Ok so i'll be honest i've only had the Tentipi's a year and has only had 'local' use in the snow on our farm but it'll be used next year in Scandanavia and i'm looking forward to being able to stand up in a nice 'warm' tent for a change.

I've not really been up into the true 'arctic' in mid winter without the comfort of a nice big Icelandic 4x4 but it's great to be able to visit some of these places when the roads are open and safe and enjoy the solitude and beauty of these clean and empty places and still experience the rawness of nature using 'basic' and comfortable camping equipment i'm familiar with and if the weather is bad i'm sensible enough to use the cabin accommodation that most of the more 'experienced' locals use!

Yep, you could say i've never been to Scandanavia and couldn't find my way up and back bown the E6 'Arctic highway' six times and never read and used a book called 'Norway's Arctic Highway' by John Douglas. Nor been to the Faroes four times and I'm guessins last years trip to Iceland was my ninth or tenth but i'm not counting...............!

As for the ABBA bird......After her number one fan started collecting her poo from the dry toilet in her lakeside cabin and she went off the rails a bit I knew the chances of her riding pillion on my GS were going to be somewhat limited so i opted for a blond Scotiish bird instead(Mrs P)

All in the longstanding tradition of UKGSer of course:thumb

OMG - You're Simon Eassom !!

Nope, def not Mr Eassom. Tales of our trips have been more than tediously recounted on this forum.

Nice to know someone has actually used their kit before recommending it though - unlike the 'this is the most wonderful piece of kit ever, you MUST BUY it', followed 6 months later with "bought this today, it is CRAP'

But as you have actually owned and used kit you recommend, then I unreservadly withdraw any negative statement explicit or implied.

Primus Rally would be good test but not sure i'd be man enough for it...........It's too cold........!

Plus i'm stuck here 'feeding cows' all winter in Scotland and can't get away til 'late May' and have yet to meet the resident Norweigian expert the one and only................Liv:bow

Fair do's. I am desperately trying to go to the Primus Rally, the cold is not the issue for me, it's the fecking ferry cost - Harwich Esbjerg is on £78 return but the compulsary cabin is min £368. So basically £450 which is a tad much for a weekend away given my current finacial position. Didn't mind paying this kind of money for a 6 week trip, but for a weekend....

And yes I could go the long way, (which I would prefer anyway), but the petrol/tyre wear alone would be much the same as the above, even ignoring the extra days off work.

Primustreff

I have been to all Primus meetings since 1993.
Since 2000 you can find pics and Norwegian text on this ones:
http://home.otc-mc.org/~197/primus_2012/index.html
http://home.otc-mc.org/~197/primus_2011/index.html
Just change year back to 2000 as said.

There is nearly always snow on Primus, we have had a year or two with almost no snow.
Temparature between + 5 and -30 celcius. The worse is when it is around 0 and rain.
Wear wool and fleece under a large riding suit. Warm boots (neoprene is my winter boots) is a must.
A good sleeping bag with good islolation to the coold ground gives you a good nights sleep.

And, don't forget your Primus.
