Just bought a new 1250GSA and I love it. This is probably the most stupid question that has been asked on here but can I stand on the footpeg to get on the bike when it is on the side stand? I saw someone at the dealership getting on a GS like that and to be honest I am nervous about putting all my weight on the footpeg like that. This is my first adv bike and I have no idea if I can do this or not.

Yes.

I have a 1200 GSA and do it all the time.

I did it for years on a Suzuki DR850 yes, correct. (Taller than a GSA) However, I discovered eventually it is better to do it on the right hand side rather than the left, because I bent the sidestand whilst doing it from the left.

But why? Why can’t you just throw your leg over and sit on the seat ?,:nenau

People do it all the time but feels very mechanically unsympathetic to be, if you are 8 stone then I guess maybe not a big problem, but if you’re 16 stone then hmmmmmmm

I can swing my leg over my 1200gs,

I occasionally use the peg, to climb onboard ;)

To the OP, the pegs are strong, (think about it, you stand on the pegs when going offroad, so they need to be strong)

the only thing you might find, is that eventually the bushes in the sidestand will have thinned due to being compressed continually

Mind you they are only wafer thin to start with ;)

I used to do it on my Rally Raid CB500X. I can easily get on the GS but the Honda was a bit too tall with the pre-load wound up and at the end of a long day's ride.

It was fine right up until the side stand snapped in the wilds of Kazakhstan and I discovered that a bike with no side stand (or centre stand) is not much fun, when fully loaded.

Eventually got it welded, after a few days leaning on trees and walls.

Haven't done it since!

Is this a thread about mounting the bike or is it about the quality of the side stand?

Regarding 1) Do as you like. It is your bike. Any mounting that doesn't include a dropped bike is a good one.
And 2) I have yet to hear about a broken side stand. And I have been on vacation with a very loaded bike. No problem!

I'd agree with that. I'd happily use the peg if the bike was on its centrestand, but not the side.

Why when you can stand on the peg??? .... and try "Throwing yer leg over" with a 50L Ortieb bag across the rear seat :blast

I dismount the bike in the same fashion, to many boot marked painted panniers not to

Same question, five years ago and none of the contributors complained of a broken side stand. Used the same mounting system even on my airhead for 90000 miles with no problems.

Also there is an ISO Standard, unfortunately I don't have access to the information.

ISO 9565:1990(en)
Two-wheeled motorcycles — Parking stability of side- and centre-stands

3.5
specific pressure
Normal force exerted on the parking surface per unit of stand area, by the stand when it is supporting the motorcycle.
