I was told that the 2720 has a solid state memory and not a hard drive, which makes it suitable for motorcycle use and have found one website that confirms this, although the Garmin website doesn't mention details about the type of memory. Now, apart from getting some condensation on the inside of the display when riding in strong sunlight, (which I'll have to take up with the retailer), the 2720 has been great. The other morning I forgot to soften the suspension after a two up trip and went riding. When I encountered some 'bumpy' roads, the 2720 kept switching itself off and rebooting. It did this almost everytime I went over some bumps. This suggests to me that there might indeed be a hard drive lurking inside and not solid state. I have checked all connections and they are sound. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

My first 2720 installation was a quick lash up using the cigarette lighter / speaker plug and adaptor in the BMW accessory socket. The BMW plug had been in use for several years and I discovered that the brass tangs of the plug had flattened. This resulted in poor or no contact and similar symptoms to yours. Bending the tangs outwards with a penknife cured the problem.
Hard wired now - no problems.

Tiller, the 27xx series and all later production GPSRs use solid state (flash) memory to hold the maps, not hard drives. Solid state memory is now much, much cheaper than tiny hard drives. Solid state memory is not affected by bumpy roads.

Cookie has it right with his suggestion - your power lead is probably loose. You can check the connection on the back of the GPSR where the power lead slides into the GPSR (check it for dirt or crud on the pins as well), but most likely, the problem is at the other end of the wire, where you hooked it into the motorcycle electrical system.

Thanks guys, I have a very simlar set up to the one 650effoff was using. It seemed to work very well, but perhaps there are just too many connections. I think I shall have to go hard wired through a switch. Gives me something to do for the weekend!
