IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Dear Triumph Motorcycle Owner,

Pirelli Metzeler are in the process of launching a safety recall.

Our records indicate that you are the owner of a Tiger 1200 GT, Tiger 1200 GT Pro or Tiger 1200 GT Explorer model years 2022 through to 2025.

DO NOT RIDE NOTICE.

If your motorcycle is fitted with the original Metzeler Tourance Next 150/70R18 M/C 70V rear tyre or a subsequent replacement Metzeler Tourance Next 150/70R18 M/C 70V rear tyre you are advised not to ride the motorcycle until further notice.

Triumph is aware of some sudden rear tyre deflation incidents leading to accidents.

Replacement Metzeler Tourance Next 150/70R18 M/C 70V rear tyres are currently being manufactured and distributed. It will take several weeks for stocks to arrive in your market.

Further information will follow as Triumph receives updates from the tyre supplier.

In addition to recalling the Metzeler Tourance Next 150/70R18 M/C 70V, Pirelli Metzeler are also preparing to recall a further 3 tyre products as listed below. These additional 3 tyre brands were never fitted by Triumph to the Tiger 1200 range, but we include details in case you have purchased any as a replacement. Triumph have not tested, approved or recommended either of the Next II tyres or the Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyre listed below:
588fdff2-ab97-ef11-8a68-6045bdf1f158
The manufacturing “M” code is located on the tyre sidewall (E.g. 4816 = week 48 of 2016).

Pirelli Metzeler provide the following owner advice:

Owners should check the condition of the rear tyre prior to riding with caution for the repair. Owners should also ensure the tyre pressure is set to 2.9 bar (290 kpa/42 lb/in²) prior to riding and the motorcycle should not be ridden with any additional load (luggage or passenger), and to keep the speed limited to the minimum allowed- applicable speed. Riders should also limit their speed to the minimum applicable for safe riding. If an owner finds any signs of tread separation or cracking in the base of the treads, the owner should not ride but instead arrange transportation of the bike.

We are sorry to be relaying this news to you. Triumph understands that this recommendation may cause you some inconvenience, but we feel the safety of customers must preside. Please anticipate further contact in the next few days. If you have any initial questions please contact your Triumph dealer.

That's handy if your bike is your main transport 🤔

Hmm. Mrs Berin has a Triumph 900 GT Pro with Tourance Next fitted. The bikes about 2 months old with 4000 odd miles. I think it’s a 150/18, but she has t received a recall notice.

maybe the extra 43kg or 40bhp is significant? Perhaps Triumph underspecced the tyre on the 1200?

@Stevie4scoops thanks for sharing - like others said, lets hope its only OEM fitments to Triumph, worth others checking. Perhaps mod (@Paul G (BHT) could pin it or post a sub post titled "Check your Pirelli Metzler tyres".

The charts shows its aftermarket fitment for the other tyres So these are ones which are widely available to all.

Best to check if you have that tyre, if it is part of the affected batch.

Note: this is based on a US recall:

What it does not say is where these tyres were made. Bear in mind, the affected tyres were fitted in the factory in Thailand so probably made in Asia. They may not be made in the same factory as tyres fitted in European factories or sold in European shops.

The text I posted was from an email sent to a friend who bought a new 1200 Explorer around 18 months ago.

they stopped making bikes in the UK in 2020, so my point remains - his 1200 when new would have probably had Asian made tyres
there have been problems in the past with Metzeler Tourance tyres made in China. Those made in Germany were unaffected.

Could well be. It’s not showing any problems, and maybe it’s either the same tyre but with less weight/power it’s ok, or maybe a different spec.

My Rally Pro has a 17” rear wheel. It might be worth checking your wife’s tyre sizes as I believe the GT pro is the same size albeit with cast rims instead of spokes.
Re reading the recall notice it appears to only be affecting 18” tyres.

I swapped my GSA for a Tiger 1200 GT Explorer about a month ago, so received the email last Thursday. It’s pretty much the end of the biking season for me (I’m not interested in riding through winter), so there’s no rush to change the tyre, but I’d be pretty p*ssed off if it was my only transport.

It does have 17" rims, and no recall notice yet so I reckon we're OK

I had those tyres on my tiger 900 gt pro. No confidence with them at all, couldn't wait to change them. Felt like on anything less than perfect surfaces they wanted to throw me off.
