Folks, I have recently posted a thread in the Ireland section, recommending www.motoespana.com for the hire of a 1200GS from Barcelona. Cost? About 95 euro a day over 9 days. New tyre and new rear pads I was warned. 5 days into the trip I checked the new rear pads, (due to the excessive brake dust on rear wheel) and found this

I phoned Mike, who rented the bike to me. He confirmed, they were genuine pads fitted by a BMW garage. He asked me to go to the nearest BMW garage and have it sorted.

I landed in Lario BMW at Lecco, Italy. (about 50kms from lake Como, where I noticed the problem.)

Arriving at 10.30am, it took a whole 45 minutes before I was on the road again. (At least 30 mins of that was trying to translate, and get my name and registration on the Italian computer system). Language dificulties.

The guys, there were very apologetic, agreeing there must be a defective batch of pads, with a super soft compound.

How much of my 63 euro, bill was for labour????????????

8.50 euro

£6 for labour, by my exchange rate.
They also gave the bike the once over, and noticed the tyre pressures were " inverted' as I was told. The front and rear had the opposite's pressures.

When changed...... the bike was transformed. Possibly, slightly better thn my 1150 ADV SE.

I did 4000kms on a hire bike, for a great price, as far as I am concerned and would therefore recommend www.motoespana.com every day. (ps they refunded my outlay at Lario BMW upon the return of the bike)

But, I cannot reccomend enough, the excellent service, treatment and price I received from BMW Italy. Top marks.

I recently read a report in Autoexpress, by a guy who took his Audi A6 to France, got it serviced, stayed 2 nights in a hotel, bought duty free wine and paid for his eurotunel fare,.......... all for the same price of an Audi service from his local dealer near London.

Makes you think about taking the bike to the Continent and getting a service done there for a fraction of the UK price. Best thing is..... it still counts as far as warranty is concerned!

I had to get a tyre changed in Prague a few years ago and the only place that could do it was the BMW dealer (who also happened to be the Czech importer). I took the wheel off myself but they told me they would have to charge a minimum 1 hours labour for fitting the tyre. I braced myself for the worst, but when they gave me the bill, the labour rate worked out at £12 per hour. This was in 2001 so I don't know what it is now, but it certainly makes you think about getting a service done while on a trip rather than getting it done here.
