Pros and cons.....

Unfortunately many of them seem to have a slight 'cough' at around 2000rpm which is a bit of a pain, other than that over 1000 miles later and I love it:thumb

Well, fixed that by simply removing the CCP:blast

I spent 2 great days hooning around the Peak District on the 1100 this week it's nearly all red now just searching for a beak. Kalahari is out!

Also tending disagreeing with Ash as he believes the 1150 6 speed box is better for motorways etc. My commute to work on the 1100 involves about 30 miles of duel carriageway generally ridden at a constant 90mph which is 5000 rpm and still feels relaxed, crack the throttle then and it just takes off:bounce1

1100 has loads of character, doesn't feel heavy and I'm not at all precious about it, possibly as it didn't cost a fortune.
Due to it's size, it doesn't have the presence of an ADV and in many ways I'm finding that a good thing.

So I'm coming to the conclusion that with an ADV tank, decent seat and shocks the 1100 would possibly be the best allround long distance 'Adventure Bike' BMW have come up with:blast

But it's the 1150 that's going to Iceland next week:confused:

I've been riding the 1100 around for the past few weeks. I fitted an adv tank last summer and got the rear shock rebuilt before my father and I took the bikes into europe for a few weeks. The adv tank is nice for long trips but with another set of internals I'd probably use the smaller tank for short local runs etc. As Timolgra says.. the gsa has more presence... for me this translates into height which is nice for legs.

I'm thinking if a nice 1100 comes up at the right price... I should sell the 1150 ADV and just keep the two 1100 plus a bit of wonga in the pocket (to buy a KTM 640 adventure)! If only first gear was a tad slower for riding in the forest it'd be perfect. I was contemplating the black one that steptoe had up a week ago... would have been ideal ... I'm just a bit reluctant to get rid of the 1150GSA as I think i might one day regret it.

Another, unequivocal vote for the 1100.

Bought my first in 1999, I'm on my third now, first two broken, never sold. When this one gives up the ghost, through neglect or worse, I'll be looking for a 4th. I rue the day I can't find an 1100 replacement.

More likely to try a Ulysses than a 1200 :augie

Monkey Piss yellow was bearable for a while....

But a change of colour was always on the cards.
Much better now I think:)

Tough choice ...

... but even now I still hanker for the 5 speed box over the 6

Nick sent me a link to this thread as I'm suffering from the double demons of the 1100 and the 1150. I've been offered a lower mileage 1150, but its basic as all the good stuff got removed. Have found an 1100 but its age and higher mileage is worrying me although it has Touratech stuff bolted onto it and nice panniers. I've read about the 1100's problems with its gearbox and final drive, and I prefer the beak of the 1150.

I want to go to Russia on it next year and want something that can cope with it all without the bearings going on me, and something that will still be reliable when I return to hit the M1 :nenau

Aaargh, desisicions, decisions!

Although you all seem to love your 1100, so I can see Nick's point! :hug

Lots of comments on the how the 1100 is lighter and better than the 1150 Adventure. Does that not make a bog standard 1150 ideal? :nenau
