Well I was booked in to have a man visit me today to fit Puncture Safe in my GSA. To my disspointment he couldn't make it and it then ocurred to me to find out if Puncture Safe is compatible with the GS's tyre pressure sensors.

I spoke to a knowledgeable Morrand guy who told me "don't do it as it mucks up the sensors and total cost to sort and replace is £300"!

Did anyone know this?

Personal choice and all that ..... I'm not a fan of any of the ultraseal stuff. Many tyre dealers won't plug a tyre that's got a sealant in, and I've had a bad experience with unbalanced wheels.

I'd rather carry a tyre plug kit ... :thumb2

Had puncturesafe in my ZZR after a mate who had used it for years kept bleating on about it, seemed worth having for long tour.

Only problem was the front end started hammering up and down at about 140mph, below this speed it felt fine.

I think they only rate it to 130mph, but cannot see this being an issue on the GS, but on big fours it is easy to reach these speeds (On the Autobahn of course)

:thumb Ruined my fun at the Nurburgring .....

Well having had 2 punctures on two bikes I know the difficulty it can bring and the costs incurred! I am in the FOR camp for this stuff but being told by BMW it will mess up your tyre pressure sensors puts me right off - and thats the only reason for me not having it in my GS! I am comfortable up to 100mph. Beyond that I back off real fast!

That "sh#t" makes a god awful mess when changing tires or repairing a flat.
(only a tire changer knows what I mean)

....just carry a puncture repair kit?

I think this is the only option I have. Thing is, when you repair a tyre with a repair kit you are setting yourself up to buy a new tyre each time, unless you keep the repaired tyre on your bike of course!

A good motorcycle tyre fitter who knows his onions should be able to effect a repair even after using a temporary plug. I have had this done on two ocassions and the deciding factor both times was where the puncture was within the tyre e.g not too close to the edge of the tyre.

So if it punctures and the slime fixes it, you'd ride around on it but not if it punctures and was plugged....?

I know which I'd trust. And unless you're diligent, you may never know that you've even got/had a puncture with the slime.

Puncturesafe can also slow deflation rates with bigger failures, as well as entirely sealing small punctures something botched repairs can often make worse and turn a slow puncture into a fast one.

Overall if your not gonna be doing 130mph I reckon it is pretty handy stuff and will probably put it in the GS for my Alps trip later this year.

I do not have pressure sensors to worry about, but I have been told in the past they are often unnafected, or only affected when you first set off, once the gel spreads out all is well - check with a reputable supplier, I used All Year Biker in Newbury, Nigel knows the product well so give him a call :thumb2

Well I'm not well experienced with punctures but have had 2. First one was during a 160 mile ride on my new Buell. RAC came out to my garage and did a temp repair. After that I was told to get it checked out and was told by our main bike tyre fitter that a temp repair prevents a "proper" repair = new tyre.

I kept the original Buell tyre and when the 2nd new tyre wore out I found someone who would be willing to repair my original one. It's now back on my Buell and all is well. But the industry would rather sell you a new tyre than fix your old one due to Health & Safety, being sued etc.

That may of been a Z rated tyre on the Buell, which a lot of tyre companies won't fix. If you find a good fitter he'll sort it out for cash (i.e. no come back, your risk).

Practically on the GS I repair with the temp plugs and the tyre wears out before the plug :thumb2

My mate works for Vauxhall as an engineer, they use Schrader sensors as do BMW. He contacted them with regards to using Ultraseal / Ride On in his GS and they said in no way will it feck up the sensors.

I've done 30,000 miles with the stuff in and sensor's work perfectly, so as I previously posted anyone who tells you different is talking bollox! :comfort

Mate advised me to go the puncture safe route, ignored him to my cost.

Found a copper nail in tyre when inspecting bike at home, no way to take wheel off so decided to try my plugs out.... total disaster, so glad not to be sat next to road trying to do it. The tiny hole was now beyond repair so new tyre time.

Went and got puncture safe in new tyre straight away.

Used some in car when it got a slow puncture (couldn't find anything in it) and it worked a treat.

Balders did you put it in through the valve ?? or put it straight in the tyre before mounting,as once its in it only flings itself to tyre not the wheel or valve :thumb2

I often tell this story - In morocco, eight bikes. One smug git doesn't tyre:blast of telling us about the wonderful anti puncture gloop in his tyre.

Only one bike had a puncture, twice - the one with the gloop. And it didn't work, both times.

Oh how we laughed. :D

Remove valve, put it in, replace valve, add air, replace valve cap, ride bike over plank with nails to check it works, if tyre goes down it means you're fecked! :comfort
