It's time to upgrade my BlackBerry and I'm considering a Samsung Galaxy S5

What difference will I notice with 'pull' e-mail rather than the BlackBerry 'push' service?

How much data does e-mail use?

Depends what you setup. If you use IMAP or POP3 your email will take longer to arrive (depending on settings) and probably won't be as functional especially if you use POP3. You don't say where your email is but if you forward it to something like Gmail or outlook. Com you will still have push mail. Gmail is obviously built into android and you have to have an account to use it so that would be my choice.

Size depends completely on the size of the email.

I have a really cheapo android phone (a no-name Chinese copy of some sort of samsung I think) with twin PAYG sim cards that I use as an emergency backup.....I have a secondary Gmail account set up for it (So I can use BB messenger, which is now available as an app for Android.)

I have sent myself emails from my BB to the android and they come through in seconds, so in real life use, there seems to be very little difference.

I don't know about the data useage though.

Virginmedia actually use Gmail as their platform. Not sure if you can hook up to it in the normal manner though. Log into your webmail and see if there is an option to use the Gmail app. It's a very simple case to forward all mail to your Android account though. Give yourself an alias of the VM account and nobody will ever know it isn't the same address.

I use gmail to aggregate email from multiple sources. Works seamlessly - you can set up gmail to get email via POP3 or IMAP and whichever device you use (I have a Windows notebook and Android phone) you see any updates almost immediately. Gmail spam filters are good and you can sort your incoming emails into multiple folders if you want.

I bought my phone, an HTC One, outright from a friend who has to have the latest clit phone every 5 minutes. I have a SIM only deal with Virgin that gives me unlimited data and more minutes and texts than I ever use for £12 a month (they wanted to put my cost up 10% from £15 to £16.50 but I threatened to migrate to giffgaff and they decided they could actually give me a 20% discount.

I use stock android email app and have various accounts both pop3 and IMAP configured and works fine - I prefer it to the gmail app. Like others I have unlimited data from my mobile account so no worries there though I'd guess email uses very little unless there are large attachments like photos etc.
