Not an issue for me, but some may well be wondering.
IMHO there is no comparison between the two, they are completely different and will feel and perform diffirently. Lets set aside the looks of them at the mo.
The 1200 (in my case 12 GSA) will be more comfortable on a long trip, more leg room, has more room 2 up, has more bottom and midrange torque, better wind/weather protection, more OEM farkles, has more road presence, looks better and finally and most importantly for me, ESA

(Ohlins is great, but ESA is
)
The 800 GS is ligter, more fuel efficient, is much cheaper, probably feel pretty quick (enough) better off road but I`d guess will be affected by side winds/trucks more and not have the safety/advantage of tubless tyres and TPC (unless your riding it to the middle of nowhere, then it would be advantages,easier to fix)
Quite alot owners of these bikes will never use them offroad, or very little and Europe will be there play ground.
So, its just a case of how much cash have you got to spend and which one you like the most really. The 1200 is IMHO, currently the best allrounder you can buy, the 800 will I have no doubt be a fantastic bike and I`m sure the sales of the 1200 will suffer due to the price of the 800. They`ll both cost most of us a small fortune in TT/Wunderlicht etc farkles and there`ll always be someone who wants something thats not available yet.
I`ve had 3 1200`s, tried other bikes, but have always got back on my 1200 and thought, "this is better than that".
