Don't want to put any manufacturers down (not bothered really) nor any Tosser Vendors (more concerned with those) but I am a little confused with all the ali pannier systems out there. I know that this question will be .... can't think of the word .... but what sort of order of quality would you put them in? Also, price order as well.

Also, which ones are quick release.

Starters for 10 please.

I've only ever used touratech, hepco becker and verns... Verns wins handsdown and also cheaper than the other two. Check out his site at project VND or just search on here and you'll find the worldbeaters. I'm chuffed to bits with them and though they aren't 'quick release' you can take them off within 5 minutes... seriously.

No need to look any further! ;)

Good luck!

I like my Hepco & Becker panniers, personally.

I like being able to take them off the bike easily.

The Beemer ones are very quick and easy to get on and off but aren't the best quality...mine leak slightly and are starting to pitt with corrosion after one winter, and that's with washing them down after every trip.

Seconded. I've had pretty much all of 'em except Metal Mules (couldn't afford the second mortgage!). Verns would get my vote every time - even if he does leave you to make the coffee while he spend three hours fitting them to a non-standard bike :D

Nice one Vern :thumb

I should explain my reason for asking my question.

I currently have system panniers which do not hold very much and are not the most useful of things with their shape and nooks and crannies.
Looking at ali panniers but don't need top quality stuff as no plans to tour the world, go off-road etc. Just want an every day set that have more usable space.

It still doesn't make it an easy job to recommend one type over another.

There are so many things to consider apart from what you have told us. For instance, do you want panniers that are easily and quickly detachable (either for bike cleaning/maintenance or because there are times that you don't need them on).

Is over-all width an issue either for peace of mind, access to bike parking or again would they need to be detachable to get the bike into its nest every time?

What about security of the panniers when fitted and the contents when left?

If you do a trip, alone or with a pillion, what sort of capacity do you anticipate requiring?

Sorry, I'm not being awkward but it's impossible to know what your requirements are. You'd be much better off spending some time looking through the various threads about panniers to see what the available options are. Then you need to make up your own mind as to what suits your intended use.

What I would say is take no notice of the "I love mine" comments. Few people are honest enough to report that they've paid good money for a pile of shite or that they made the wrong choice.

Try and read just the stuff about how they fit, how secure they are, how water-proof, easy to remove, re-fit even repair or get spares for. Then see what suits you best before fainting when you see how much they cost (really cheap ones look it when it comes to the way they fit).

Few (if any) are pretty so you can safely ignore the comments about how they look and be guaranteed that someone, somewhere will think that the ones you like look like shite.

Wasn't there a comparison thread some time back ? Was it Fanum, or yourself, that started it. It had pretty comprehensive details about the various types of panniers available, and their merits/drawbacks.

Thanks Guys for your input so far. I appreciate that it is a minefield and everybody has their own interpretation but thought I would give it a go. I did look through the pannier review link but wanted some more up to date info as last update was from 2006.

I am not too fussed if they are quick release or not. I will mainly be using the bike with panniers off and the only time I would have them on would be for the trip and put leave them on the bike during this time.

No access issues for the bike with either the panniers off or on the bike.

Guessing panniers no wider than handlebars.

Price would be a major factor. Don't want to spend hundreds for somehting that I would use now and then.

Think I need to meet up with people who have ali ones and see what's what for myself.

Maybe I should stick with my systems and buy a roll pack etc and strap across top of them for extra room.

And again i believe this to be Neutral

Another one her for Vern's Worldbeater panniers, I've had a few including standard, for me the best ones are Vern's, he also does them in various sizes and with different size lids. They are the lightest and after seeing one that has hit a tree at silly speed, strongest panniers I've come across.

All IMHO, arrange to visit Vern and take a look for yourself, I really think you need to view his before making your decision :thumb2

Philip
Thanks for the list of panniers. Didn't realise that there were so many.
Think I would like to buy British so could knock a lot of these off.

second +:thumb for Ardcases.

available in whatever size you want, and Roger (Ardcase) will powder coat them in whatever colour you specify at NO extra cost.

as you can probably tell, Im very happy with mine.

Good value for money IMHO
