This is going to be such a stupid question, I know, but......here goes anyway!

I'm about to buy a 2nd hand Quest off ebay as I'm embarking on a trip down to Turkey.

Now, I know it comes loaded with UK maps and the bumf says there is enough spare memory for another 'region' in Europe.

If that is the case, how do I in reality load all the countries I am travelling through? Do I need to erase the country I've just been through in order to load a new one? Does that mean I need to take my lap top with me? Am I missing something and being really stupid here (probably!)?

Many thanks
Andres

Andres,

providing you've bought a UK version rather than a US version you'll have enough space to load all the maps you need before you go. When you load maps you overwrite the existing maps so you don't need to worry about deleting them.

BTW the Quest comes loaded with a base map not the UK detailed maps, all detailed maps have to be loaded.

Hi all first post, but this seemed a good place to satrt.

I know the US version has 115mb memory and the UK version 243mb, but how do you tell the difference when buying secondhand?

Thanks, in advance, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions later.

One other thing worthy of note is that the European detailed maps only go as far east as Italy in the general direction you'll be heading buy the Quest's base map has the main roads in Turkey.

Not necessarily true I'm afraid. The Quest has a limited capacity and it depends on what type of tour you're doing as to whether you have enough space to load all the maps. What most people do is to plan the route on a PC and then select only the map sections along the route. That sort of plan will allow a number of countries to be covered.

If however you're doing a major tour taking in a number of countries, as you are, or you have no fixed route you might struggle to load all the maps you need. You might be OK or you might find that you'll need to miss out sections (motorways perhaps?).

I'm off on a seven European city tour next week and have found that I need about 450Mb to load the route so I've had to miss out sections. It's really the cities I need and they are the most memory hungry! We'll see how it works out but it's disappointing.

There are ways.....

If you create a long track through Europe with the track editor in MapSource you can upload this track (up to 10000 points) to the Quest. The track don't need a map at all in the unit. This makes it possible for you to store only the city centers in the map memory while still being able to follow a route (track...) between the cities and in the suburbs. :thumb
