Quest or 2610

I have a Zumo 220 and love it - perhaps that's because there have been no dramas so far.

Bought for less than the RRP on Amazon - can be used either in the car or on the bike. Comes with all bits and bobs (Mapsource had been missed out but a quick call to Garmin and it arrived in a couple of days) Easier to use - full UK Post Search facility. All of Europe on the Unit's main memory - haven't had to buy a SD Card yet.

I realise price is a bit more than the older Units but this way all Maps and Software are up to date. It can be linked up to a head-set via Bluetooth - I don't need that so not sure how easy it is to do.

It ticks all the boxes - a TomTom rider wouldn't!

I'm beginning to think going down the Zumo route might be the best option seeing as the older units can't be updated apart from the 2720 which are rare to find.

I have a Garmin Nuvi which I use in the car and with a waterproof bag on the bike but it's limited to what it can do and find and adding a via into the route is a pain.

If you like the Nuvi 250 Stef maybe the 550 will be OK you can add vias no problem, and you can import routes..

What I don't like are the graphics as to be able to see it it has to be in 3D mode which I don't like.
Also you cannot change the information screens to show other things that you might prefer, lastly no sound in helmet, suits me fine as I have never ever used sound on any GPS... Does my head in:D

I've never used sound either. Did a bit of web browsing and noticed the Zumo 400 is cheaper to buy than the 220, Is the 400 an older model ?

I love my quest even though it has faults,

small screen- np
very quiet at speed in with the autocom-so so
my original cradle failed-pins, got a ram one now :thumb2

they are tiny and truly portable, pop it in your pocket when off the bike
battery last for ages, should you need it.

What will I do when the day finally comes and it packs up :nenau

So you can use Mapsource to load routes from the PC/Laptop sounds good :D

Yes no problem. The reason I say I don't like it are the non ability to customise screen colours and data fields....

you are limited to ten routes but no big deal if you are close to a computer;...

Tens no problem if travelling far afield I'd have a wee netbook with me for route planning.

So if you get one, you have to download the map from Garmin, it is included but no physical disc... Plus it's only an update so if you don't already have mapsource of an earlier version installed you'll have to run through the procedure Fanam found and posted a while back....

Apparently the 550 is on it's last legs and it's internal memory now struggles to cope with the latest versions of maps. Still a good bit of hardware but getting old - how much longer will Garmin support it for?

The 220 gives you the choice of 2D or 3D view. The bottom right icon can be set to show your preference - miles to go, current speed etc etc.

The 400 is an older model.

Be careful when you see deals that look cheap. Does it say "NOH" - these are refurbished Units - check what comes in the box and does it have a guarantee of some sort.

it's a minefield out there :rob

This doesnt get any easier does it ?

I did not know the 550 was on its last legs, I thought it came out in 2009, but I don't know....

Voila 3D mode, you cannot change colours or the info boxes bottom right and left, they do change though when you start navigating

Just checking the Garmin site and I see the Nuvi 550 takes micro SD cards so how does it struggle with memory capacity ?

It does not struggle with memory, I have 2011 mapping on mine, not quite all in but all you'd need.

And it can't be that old its still listed as a current unit on the Garmin site £279.99 compare that to the price of a Zumo !

Got mine for a lot less than that but it is a NOH... Looks brand new to me and I got the most recent mapping. But it was an extra 40eur for the bike mount and cable....

179£ from memory...

don't forget my first post about this GPS BTW:augie
