Quest or Quest2

Thanks Charlie B and Twotter managed to get hold of Garmin today and unit now on the way back to them for them to check and hopefully replace with something else I did a covering letter and said I would even accept a Quest 1 as long as it does what it says on the box. HMR thanks for your input re trunicating routes did not know this was an issue with Q1 if I get one will do the same as I did with Q2 which is download all the waypionts I need and make the unit do the routes 1 at a time from the sequential waypoints I put in the Unit.Engineer good luck with your trip to south of France hope you have better luck than me with yours but more important enjoy the roads esp route Napolion the three Gorges and esp the Maritine Alps apart from getting the piss taken out of me from the map readers among us we had a great time

Thanks - I hope it works - so far I have had no problems - screen re-draw easily keeps up both in and out of town - it has NEVER locked up. The only slow thing that I have noticed is that it can take a long time to calculate very long complex routes with wierd route options set, this is not normally a problem as I always do complex routes on the PC and then download, it is so easy to do via the USB connector.

One thing that caught me out initially was setting waypoints on dual carriage ways - if you accidentally point the way point in the opposite carriageway it always wants you to go back and visit that way point! - of course once you realise this, it is easy to zoom in and place the waypoint in the correct place!

I will be taking maps with me as well!

Another Q1 v Q2 question...

Does the Quest 1 have any points of interest (such as petrol stations etc) installed with the provided maps? The Garmin website states that the Quest 2 does but doesn't say anything about POIs for Quest 1.

Judging by the comments about Quest 2 speed, having POIs doesn't seem like a good enough reason to buy a Quest 2... but if the Quest 1 doesn't have them, it might be a reason to go for another model range all together.

Quest 1 has whatever POI's come with the software included in the box. Quest 2 has the same but can use Garmin's POI loader so you can download other people's POI's off the interweb.

Not sure about City Navigator 8 as the village I live in has suddenly acquired a post office from a place ten miles up the road and a pub that closed down years ago. Come back City Select 7 all is forgiven

Should do. I didn't have any problems with my Quest 1.

I did play with the POI loader when I had my Quest 2('s) and wasn't that impressed. That might be just me though

Slight Update
After all the good advice I purchased a Quest 1 and used it on a trip over the weekend into Wales and it worked very well - the only limitations were my understanding of how it works to get the best out of it - i am still learning new features and shortcuts now.
Only problem i have to get used to is when it says a junction is 200 ft away its time to turn.

Seems a good piece of kit.

Same near me in W Lahndun, 2 garages listed have shut, several restaurants not trading now, so the database of POI's seems to date from maybe three years ago..???
Must remember that when I'm desperate for petrol in the boonies, just hope the garage shown nearby is still in business and open...

That's a fundamental problem with maps and data bases, electronic or paper - they will always be out of date because it takes so long to gather all the data.

Just bought the very latest Michelin map of France and there is a warning on it stating that the N and D roads are currently being renumbered - that could make life interesting.

Thanks Twotter and Charlie B just received street pilot 2720 tonight when I got home from work as a replacement for Q2 from Garmin. Will have a go in car at the weekend then figure out how to get it on the GS I have ram mount from Quest guess I just need the ram adapter and power cable for 2720 and I will be fine.

Hi Bob...

Now you are happy as a pig in chiffon I suppose..??

You'll notice the difference with the 2720 straight away...
it just works, no messing about.
Glad to hear that Garmin sorted you out properly at last.
They are a good company I think you would now agree, they just
have to triple the phone lines and their Customer Services staff...!

Yep your right I have not had the unit outside yet but even in inside mode this thing rocks as luck would have it I still had City Nav 8nt on the PC from the Quest2 so downloaded a couple of routes from Mapsource via USB and even this is lightning fast compared to Q2.
Well Twotter and Charlie B once again guys thanks for your input and advice as it was getting a bit messy with me being one step into civil court territory a place I did not want to be as all I wanted was something that worked and pleased Garmin came through and restored my faith in them as I have used their products for quite a few years now starting with a GPS12.

Reason for Quest 2 slow redraw rate is run-time compression used to store maps. Garmin should fit faster CPU's but me reckons they've got a ton of Quest 1 type CPU's they are using up.
