Will I be able to fit France and Spain on a Quest or would I only be able to store a part of it? Would I lose the UK maps?

Will it be at a level to point me to fuel stations and hotels?

Will it be at street level or just major routes?

What brackets do people use for the GS and how much are they?

Will it run off the power supply from the GS and do I need separate leads for that?

Cheers

Dick

Dick, these questions have been dealt with in great detail before. But here's a few hints:

Will I be able to fit France and Spain on a Quest or would I only be able to store a part of it?

Only a part of it. The mapsource maps can be loaded in smallish sections to the unit, see some of Whatton's posts for examples. Or were you intending to visit ALL of France and Spain in a single trip?

Would I lose the UK maps?
Yes. You would then reload them when you got back to the UK.

Will it be at a level to point me to fuel stations and hotels?
Yes. All Garmin units also have a basemap with the major roads of Europe, North Africa and places East permanently installed. The basemap doesn't have petrol and hotels, but will get you from A to B over major roads, which are likely to have petrol stations, and probably hotels as well.

Now, use that search!

Dick, I bought mine the other week and decided in the end to mount it on a RAM mount and handlebar clamp. I' ve fitted another socket, like a GSA on the beak, and run the power cable into that. All works fine. let me know if you need more details.

Many thanks mate. I haven't decided which to go for yet but if I go for the Quest I'll remember your offer :D

It seems that the Quest will probably do all I need and I like the smaller size for portability but the 2610 has more memory and the bigger screen might be better for my old eyes.... decisions, decisions.

I haven't even considered any others apart from the hard disk Mio. Are there others I should consider?

Cheers

Thanks for the info. As I said in my previous post I think the Quest would be what I need.

Searches!!!!! TBH the search throws up so much stuff that it really is easier to reinvent the wheel. About time a FAQ was started for GPS (as was suggested in BCAB) as the same questions get asked over and over again.

Along the lines of.....

What is GPS and what does it give you? Description of how to use one and the type of readouts (voice, turn by turn etc.) I don't know what I'm talking about here but it's the kind of thing I want to know. Does it tell you nearest open fuel stations, hotels etc?

Maps and how to use them - something about the software, Mapsource, City unlocks (wot dey den?) and other such stuff

Different GPS models with +ve and -ve points giving an indication over what can be stored on a unit. Being careful not to actually recommend anything :D

Any posts to the above categories should always go through a moderator to keep the whole FAQ n an easily read and managed format.

Damn, if I knew enough about it I'd do it myself :(

A good job for someone......

Cheers

If you want a big screen, then you may want to consider the 276C, which has a gigantic screen. Downside to the 276C is it costs a pretty penny, as you have to buy the "automotive kit" (i.e. the maps) separately. Alternatively (to get away from the Garmin models), you could look at some kind of PDA together with an Otterbox for weatherproofing. I would only consider a PDA if you think you will be using a PDA a lot anyway.

Don't get hung up the small memory: I was playing around with mapsource, and found I coud fit all of Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, the border regions with Germany, the Pyrenees on the French and Spanish side, and the top third of Spain (from Valencia to Galicia) into 250 MB. Then you've got the basemap as well.

Do tell us what you decide on, and good luck.

Wish I'd read this before thinking I'd knobbed up my Quest putting in maps for my next trip and losing Blighty completely.

Yosi has been a great help... Cheers mate.
