Hi all

A bit of advice please from all you GPS gurus. I have seen a Quest, brand new UK version for sale at £280. Is this a good price, should I rush for the credit card and what questions should I ask afterwards?

I would say it's a good price, (they're bringing over £200 secondhand on ebay)although it is now discontinued. Quest 2 is about £450 but there have been some reported problems with it. The original Quest is perfectly good enough, so save a big chunk of cash and get a reliable product.

Isn't it just one or two that had problems?

Anyone else out there got a Quest 2 and can comment about it please, as Im just between the Quest 2 and the TT rider (After reading a load of threads "which GPS"), starting to get a bit worried now

I'd still consider the original Quest. The only the thing Quest 2 has of any significance is a bigger memory, with all the maps pre-loaded. Not really worth the extra money to me.

That's exactly what we want it for...

We'll use it for travelling around Europe, so we'd like the latest maps, and I think there's is where the bigger memory helps, but I might be wrong

Our needs are:

- A unit that needn't to be powered on the bike
- Have the whole Europe on the card (Although we're indeed taking a laptop with us)
- I can attach to an Intercom (intaride probably)

After reading lots of threads we came to the Quest 2, but can easily change our minds!!!The TT rider has the bennefit of the SiRF chip, which is an intresting pointl, that's why We're considering the latter as well!

The trip will start in June, should we wait till about May to buy the GPS?

You really don't need a bigger memory if you only load the maps that are relevant to your trip. Basically, you load a 'corridor' not whole countries. See Whatton's post here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46377&highlight=quest

If you buy any new Garmin unit you will be entitled to the latest software version if it's not already installed. So you could have the same software on a new Quest as comes with the Quest 2.

No! Whatever you decide on, buy it and use it, as soon as possible. You want to be totally familiar with it before your trip and with the Quest/Quest 2 you can play with it in the house or when walking etc.

I don't know anything about Tom Tom, so I can't advise you about them.

i have the quest 2 very happy, me and my daughter will be going through 6 countrys this year so the fully loaded mapping is ideal you could get the quest 1 and download your route if it is a shorter journey than ours, but its nice to change your route through the journey the quest2 will let you do this

The Quest 2 has the facility to download custom POI maps - i.e. speed camera locations with audible warning on them.

If you download the map that you can overlay on the Quest 1 then programme in a route you can't see the speed traps.

Not sure If this is what you meant,but I tried my Quest yesterday with V8 and speed camera overlay. and the cameras still showed up with the route I had requested

If you mean that you sort the route on the pc and then download it to your Quest then you may have forgotten to include the speed camera map - remember that when you download to your Quest it overwrites any existing maps....we've all done it

:what Twotter said...you need to select the maps, then switch to the overlay map and select that as well before uploading the whole lot....



Nick, in answer to your original question, £280 isn't a bad price but it's not a good price either......If I were you i'd hang on unless you really need the unit in the next month or so.....

The QUest1 has been on sale for £80 in the PCWorld/curry's chain recently, and I've little doubt it'll be sold off cheaper than £280 in other outlets soon because it's ben superceded by the Quest II and there are lots of other competant GPS units coming out all the time (Tom Tom range etc)

Keep your eyes open here, online elsewhere and in the retail market and I'm sure you'll find it cheaper very soon.....

I just wish that Amazon UK would drop the price like Amazon USA - $350 (£200) is a lot better than the £317 that Amazon UK are quoting

You can actually buy a North Americsa basemap 2610 from Amazon.com for less than Amazon UK charge for a Quest 1 - $500 or £286!

The proper way to avoid this problem is to not upload any maps at all when you upload routes from the PC. Uncheck the "maps" box when uploading. It's only when new maps are uploaded as the old maps are deleted.
