May be a thick question, but I don't know the answer so here goes.

I know the minimum tyre tread for a car is 1.6mm, but does the same apply to bikes? :nenau

It's 1mm on bikes, all the way round the circumference and 75% accross.

millard

I've read a few tests that show that car tyres wet performance (braking and cornering) drops of sharply once they get below 3mm. I've not seen anything similar for bikes, but I wouldn't want mine down to 1mm in a country where we have such crap summers!

Nor would I, and certainly not to only 75% of their width, but that's the law

You only got 2 tyres on the road, if you push tyres to the legal limit on these challenging road surfaces/conditions, it's false economy..... I feel that common sense should prevail, save on bling & buy a ring...:D

"Save on bling & buy a ring" eh? Good quote. :D Got to agree with you, there's no point taking any risks with tyres, but I've got 3.6mm average tread depth on the front and more on the back.

I was just curious what the absolute minimum was, as I had a feeling it was different for cars and bikes. :thumb2
