Questions about MOT

Portugals equivalent of MAG is called "GAM".
The most accurate and up to date info i have seen comes from them.
This is a (translated) statement from them on the matter;

"
GAM say:
"Motorcycle inspection is justified to reduce the number of fatalities on the road, but those deaths are not the result of motorcycle’s mechanical failure. In Portugal, it is statistically impossible for someone to die from a motorcycle mechanical failure."
"The IPO (MoT) will not prevent motorcycle accidents, no less put an end to motorcycles that some consider illegal."
"The entities that have the duty to act preventively in the fight against the scourge of deaths on the road are thus subjected to yet another law that not only allows them to visit the wallets of drivers more often, but also does not prevent any accidents."
"We appeal to those interested and especially motorcyclists to be attentive and participate with us in defending their interests."
"We also call on the survivors of independent journalism to investigate and publish the true interests that were behind the law that forced inspection centers to spend huge amounts of money, in buying useless equipment that only served those who sold them."

... after all these years have passed, you must have learned that "shooting" through the social media wasn't going there... It went bad for them and even left them in bad sheets, such was the exposure it had and even led society at large to wonder (finally) about what they really are and what mandatory vehicle inspections are for.
We refer to the caste of mammals threatening us (again) with the law that forces 100% approved motorcycles to go to inspection. You all may have noticed by now that the tactics have changed, but the goal remains. Serving up another half dozen wannabe puppets, they've been biting us in silence... But we don't shut up and repeat:
The IPO (Mandatory Periodic Inspection) of motorcycles is justified to reduce the number of road deaths, but these deaths are not the result of motorcycle's mechanical failure. In Portugal, it is statistically impossible for someone to die from a motorcycle mechanical failure: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=2736100876682731&set=a.422770383315003
It's not the bike's fault, so we won't accept being forced into a motorcycle inspection. Furthermore, inspection centers are not responsible for the service they provide, nor do they give us any guarantees or more valuables in terms of prevention of road accidents. This is also why there is a need to impose inspection as mandatory. If it was really an added value for motorcyclists, there would be no need, bikers would join because the business benefited everyone and not just the inspection centers.
The IPO will not prevent motorcycle accidents, no less put an end to motorcycles that some consider illegal. These ones, to inspection only if they go into the lap of the authorities that supervise the transit. This is what already happens with the current law, no need for another: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=548586840733356&set=a.422770383315003
In Portugal, motorcycle inspections already exist and they feed on motorcycles that, according to the law in force, have presented irregularities to the authorities. The "new" law they want to impose on us, will force motorcycles without any irregularity to submit themselves to the IPO, because these, being the biggest slice of the cake, are the most desired to cover the (dis)investment that inspection centers were forced to make to equip themselves for motorcycles.
IPO will add nothing to the authorities already paid by all of us to tax us, even because they will continue to fine "illegal bikes", with or without approved IPO.
So what's the law that requires ALL motorcycles to be inspected for?
It serves to increase the revenue volume of inspection centres and authorities through fines for non-compulsory periodic inspection. It's a law that does not prevent accident, but ensures an increase in revenue by outlawing and punishing all motorcycles that have not paid a lifetime tax in the name of IPO. The entities that have the duty to act preventively in the fight against the scourge of deaths on the road are thus subjected to yet another law that not only allows them to visit the wallets of drivers more often, but also does not prevent any accidents. This sinisterity will continue to serve, not only to justify such measures, but to extend them, deepen them and even make way for more to be applied in the future. If the motive "sincerity" ceased to exist, there would be no more arguments for those who create these kinds of legal schemes to feed off others. He who produces nothing always has to feed on others...
As if all this wasn't enough, the absence of the IPO becomes another reason for insurers to get away with paying the damages.
We appeal to those interested and especially motorcyclists to be attentive and participate with us in defending their interests.
We also call on the survivors of independent journalism to investigate and publish the true interests that were behind the law that forced inspection centers to spend huge amounts of money, in buying useless equipment that only served those who sold them.
Tip: the impunity that were behind this law that guaranteed them a business worth millions, when they managed to get the centers to "equip" for the motorcycles, which compensate those inspection centers for the money and time they lost in this move... "disgraceful", even deceived by those who represent them were...

Hope this helps.

Doesn't the MOT classify spots as "front position lamps" in which case they don't have to be working (ie can be disconnected) and are not a mandatory part of the test unless part of the oem integrated daytime running lamps? They do AFAIK have to be white light, amber or "mainly white with a blue tinge" and if not centrally mounted, fitted symmetrically about the centreline of the bike.

No. They are not position lights. They are spot lights. And non-testable.

Your position lights are the useless little bulbs in your headlight. And you don't even need them if you have a headlight.

It doesn't necessarily make spots road legal. It may come to a surprise to many that you can pass an MOT and still be illegal in many ways.

If it's not in the MOT manual then we can't test or fail them. An MOT is more about safety and compliance than it is about the law. Although it obviously overlaps quite a lot.

Big roll bag for touring with carry straps:). Top boxes are handy for storing lids for general use but they can just look a bit unbalanced on some bikes. That said, I might fit one to mine seeing as I already smoke a pipe and even my tobacco comes in a tartan styled pack....but I don't have any slippers so not quite an old git yet, even if I am grumpy :rob
