I`m going to take pity on you because it`s Friday and I`m guessing your fire truck has the electronic vehicle check which does away with a manual oil check.

You can`t check the level with the computor and have to do it manually. Its` that sight glass underneath the LH cylinder head. There are plenty of threads on here about checking the level which you may want to spend about a week and a half trawling through:rob

If I were you, I`d delete the thread because I can see the sharks starting to circle for attack:augie

IIRC if you have the clock showing in the info screen, when you come to a complete halt and the engine is up to temperature it'll show "ok" if it thinks the oil quantity is ok.

"Tarquin, ...

... Tarquin to service line one please"

Sorry, he's rattling his way South at the moment :blast

You can only get the oil check on the computer if the bike is stationary and on level ground with the engine running (and has been for 10 minutes or so). The computer will then say OK or not as the case may be. If you cycle through the options on the computer with the bike moving it skips this option out. Only useful if you need something to do when waiting at traffic lights - I use the standard sightglass technique anyway.

I also think a couple of posters should own up that they didn't know about this feature on the computer and criticised the original poster for asking the question in the first place.

:D

I've got the feature on my bike and never use it (it's not terribly accurate after all). Check the sight glass after you fill with fuel, the bike will be on level ground, it'll be warmed up and by the time you've paid for the fuel, the oil will of settled - all rather simple.

What's a computer :rob

lol

O....K got the answer in the end then.

Your right the new Engines have a electronic level test for oil. As do most of the HGVs I drive. As did the Mercedes I had.

When I saw the Oil option I knew there was a checker just didnt know how it worked.

And yes some of you are right a weekly check at the glass is a good idea.

Thanks for the help Tossers.:pullface

Glad you got your answer, Mike.

I have an old 1200GS without a computer but, on a GS, how difficult is it to check the oil by looking in the glass. Even assuming you need to put it on the centre stand specially, it's still only a ten second job.

Maybe on a faired machine where the oil sight glass is a little obscured it makes more sense. And they're not going to make a different computer for each model, I suppose.

I found mine say the oils ok but then checked on the glass only to find there's no oil on show. Don't trust it, use the old fashioned way!

The engine needs to be stopped (the computer is then off and not showing
O I L O K) to allow the oil to drain back and show on the sight glass.......:augie The exact procedure is in the manual I think.
