After a 580 mile round trip wearing my Arai (with ear plugs) my ears have been ringing for a couple of days now. I ride an 1150gs with a touring screen and it has the obligatory Remus and decat but I really need a quieter lid, does anybody have any opinions on what to try next?
I am looking at Nolan helmets but don't know much about them, I also considered Schubert but are they worth the expense?
Should I be looking at an adventure helmet like the tour x or BMW gs ?:nenau

Had 2 Schuberth lids now, C2 and now a C3. If they fit the shape of your head then they are probably the quietest on the market. Particularly for flipfronts which, as a specs. wearer, are ace for not needing to remove your glasses as you put the helmet on or take it off

I think it comes down to the fit !

I had a Shoei GT air which is renowned for being quiet and it nearly sent me deaf whereas the Tour X which is renowned for being noisy was very quiet for me much more so than my latest helmet Arai rebel

The quietest I have ever had was a system 6 but i hated it

I've had a Schuberth C3 ,now have a C3 PRO plus a S1 PRO, they are extremely quiet helmets especially the full face ones

Funny you say that, as I've just bought a GT Air, and it's the quietest lid I've had, including a Schuberth C3!:D

You make my point !

It was so loud on me it was unbearable. That and the fact that no matter what i did i couldn't stop my glasses misting in it

+1.

And where the turbulent air is hitting you can also be a factor i.e. if its between your shoulders and the bottom of the lid then that's going to be noisy.

Is this a new issue - a new lid, new bike, new screen?

Just goes to show we're all different eh.

Turns out I've got a perfect Shoei-shaped head so that's what I tend to get.

My old Qwest was reasonably quiet but suffered from buffeting.

I'm currently using a GT Air as my go-to lid for the commute and on the GSA - light, limited buffeting and very quiet (I find).

I've also got an NXR which is lighter than the GT air, has even better aerodynamics and is also the quietest lid I've had. It's a more sporty lid so I use it on the Blade - it only loses out to the GT Air because of the practicality of the drop down visor.

BMW Sport Integral !

Quietest Lid I have ever had! Also suited my head shape too I guess you could say I seem to have a Shoei shaped head as most of my most comfortable ones were Shoei

The only reason I haven't got one now, is that I fell out with the local dealer manager (understatement) and hadn;t been across the door for 10 years until recently

Apart from the helmet design and fit there are ear plugs and there are ear plugs. Custom moulded plus will eliminate much more noise than standard squidgy foam disposables. If you don't loose them they also last for years.

What ear plugs are you using? The question you asked is one with many answers. In the end you have to fit the helmet to your shape of head. I'm a Shoei fit and any medium fits like a glove. My Neotec is very quiet but you do still get wind noise. Also I use laser lite ear plugs and these are rated NRR 32dB meaning that if the noise measured at the ear is 92dB then the reduced noise using the ear plugs is more or less equal to 60dB. It is also a recommended ear plug for continuous noise and not for gun fire or such like.

I am glad to see its not just me complaining about the GT Air, having come from a well used Arai, I was expecting a drop in noise but the Shoei is much nosier on both the BMW and Ducati, if only arai did an internal sun-shield

If you've come from a well used Arai, you obviously have an Arai shaped head, so you will get excessive wind noise from a Shoei.

Nutty I cannot contain Myself So I apologise in advance

BOLLOCKS, BOLLOCKS, BOLLOCKS, BOLLOCKS, BOLLOCKS!

AND

BOLLOCKS!

The shape of "Your" head has nothing to do with Aerodynamics of a helmet thats designed in a wind tunnel for stability of the occupier of said protective head gear!

They're all noisy in my experience if you stick 'em in any sort of airflow.

They're vaguely attached to your bonce and come in two varieties:

-uncomfortable and noisy
-comfortable and noisy

Get a nice car if you like no more than a light rustle round the door mirrors.

My understanding is that flip fronts with a skirt are the quietest and thats my Shoei Neotec is noisy, because it hasn't got one. I just cant make my mind up C3 Pro or E1

Stick sprouts in your ears.

Cheap, green and boosts employment in Lincolnshire.

No such thing as a quiet helmet....... imho.

Ear plugs with a rating of 30 snr or higher should work if fitted correctly.

Getting them in correctly is the key.

Good luck.
