Hi,

Meant to ask this some time ago...

My R100 GSPD ('93) neutral light lights when in neutral with clutch out, but lights always in any gear when clutch is in.

What would cause this?

Is there a switch on the clutch to stop you starting in gear with the clutch out?

If so it could be a failed diode, other than that as the neutral light switch earths the neutral light, it's likely getting an earth somehow through the clutch, which could possibly be a switch or gearbox fault.

Had the same experience , my fault lay with the neutral switch , in the most awkward of awkward places under the Box which could only really be accessed with the removal of the rearmost engine mounting bar , and spacer . There was some weeping and nashin of teeth first getting the spacer bar out without damage , then some more getting it in !.

A good time to change yer gear box oil , cos your gonnie loose a heap of it anyways !.

Neutral switch by the sounds of it- whilst you have the "sleeve" out, just grind
a mill or so off the end. Will fit back easily, and come out easily for the next time!
Don't buy a pattern switch though, cough up for the more expensive one!
DAMHIK!!!!!

Guys,

The light if off while riding along except if in neutral so I think the neutral switch is ok.

Light comes on when I pull in the clutch no matter what gear it is in.

There is no sidestand switch so the clutch switch can only be to prevent starting in gear with clutch out.

It sounds like a wiring mistake maybe when the bike was stripped for powdercoating and reassembled.

Or maybe this is normal as the easiest way to create a starter interlock is to use the neutral light as the "starter enable", having the neutral switch and the clutch switch in parallel, either lighting the neutral lamp and enabling the starter?

Does that make sense? Where to look?

I had the same problem on my VFR, problem was down to a diode failing.

The diode was inline in the cable in the middle of the harness, so it wasn't that obvious that thjere was one, and they can also be inside some of the cases which look like a simple relay, but have a few more components inside them.

Sometimes they dont show up on the wiring diagram either, with just the " relay" and the terminals / connections being shown.

If you can substitute a known good starter relay that might eliminate that possibility, but check the number on your relay - my R100GS only works with the "wrong" relay.

Sometimes there is a legend on the relay itself, and they usually show any diodes that are there.

.

If i remember correctly the diode on a R100 GS is in the main loom just before the headstock. So you have to cut into the main sheathing.
