I need to upgrade my front brakes but only want to change the hose and pad material at this point?, Can anyone recommend a good s/s brake hose kit and a better set of front pads,.

gs brake pads

i use carbon loraine brake pads, they seem about the best i have used, but you should also thing about fitting a cast iron disc.

Firstly please note; IMHO if you wish to upgrade your front brake, fitting new/better pads will give little or barely noticeable improvement.

Jill's 100gs had the 1100/1150 caliper and floating disc and SS brake line upgrade by it's previous owner. This I feel was money wasted, as it give very little improvement at all. Even after fitting new Cintered pads myself.

Stainless Steel brake hose is a must what ever direction you go in.
There are quite a few companies selling these so you should find one for a decent price.

When choosing new pads, look for the Cintered type (again, what ever direction you choose to go in). These have a much better bite on the disc and can improve braking by quite possibly 20-30% over the standard type. I suggest you look at pads from Carbon Lorain and Ferodo (diamond or platinum I think).

I personally would not recommend EBC pads. They are a bit like Hagon shocks. They start off well, feel good etc. But they go off the boil quite quickly and become hard and inefficient. Even to the point that they do damage to the disc.
This is my oppinion, based on the use of both these products on different bikes (some mine, some belonging to others) over the last 30 years. Each time I have relented and given them another go, I have regretted it.

If you seriously want better braking on the 100, don't wast your money, fit an 1150/1200 caliper (1200GS type first seen on the later 1150's) and the bigger 320mm disc.
This will give you the braking your looking for. Yes it cost more, but piece of mind is better than regret.

Thanks for all the info ,but I wa trying to keep the bike standard as possible, the pads are still on its first set, (22 years old but 7k mls) so want changing but I was not sure on the hose,?either attached via a Banjo fitment or direct screw in method, some of the sellers don`t explain this to well.

I went through the process step by step doing the following mods-

Different pads -bugger all difference
S/S brake line - " " "
Semi floating disc - some improvement
Semi floater and twin pot caliper - significantly better but not great
320mm disc with the above -good enough for spirited riding

* Can be changed back to standard set up in less than 1 hour.

The good thing about braking upgrades is you can do it gradually, start with new pads and a braided line as planned. A s/h twin pot caliper won't be hard to find (ebay etc), when the budget allows, and not to exxy. The disc is the costly bit but sooner or later your disc will be too worn to be safe and you will be up for a replacement anyway.

From memory Rob Farmer has a cost effective brake mod on here -do a search for 'brakes'.

If you go the full mod like I have it will give you a safer ride as well as better mileage from your underwear  :D

Anything more than the 320mm disc with standard caliper on a 100GS is excessive IMO as all you'll do is overwhelm the tyres / fork brace / frame etc etc. I'd guess a twin disc set up would be nice as it won't have the same issue of trying to twist the forks, but as you have a 100GS then I guess that'll be into serious money / engineering.

The 320mm disc + standard caliper with a venhil powerhose plus http://www.venhill.co.uk/Brake_&_Clutch_Line_Fittings/POWERHOSE_PLUS worked well two up in the Dolomites last year for me.

they probably work best, but twin discs never look right IMO.

If you have the OEM caliper your choice of sintered HH Pads is limited - I think Lucas/TRW are now making one which is reputed to work well, and Brembo once made one too.
EBC HHpads dont seem to work with Brembo disks, but they dont make one for the OEM caliper anyway.

SS hoses will make no difference if your existing hoses are in good condition, but a smaller master cylinder will-- but 12 mm ones always seem to get a good price on Ebay
